Why the issue with it? If it's directly relevant then I fail to see why it's an issue, especially seeing as how people get told all the time to do their own searches. Well, often times that leads to old threads and questions raised from information contained within that old thread. Is it just a way to keep new threads going?

I just don't get it. Now if you're looking for a specific response from someone that posted in a 10 year old thread, that's just retarded, but I don't get locking an old thread because someone just bumps it to the top with some updated info or questions seeking updated info.

Can someone enlighten me as to why it's such a big deal that mods almost always automatically lock them as soon as they're bumped?

If it is directly relevant to a specific instance where someone needs customer support or was ripped off or the like, yeah, the thread wouldn't be locked. If it's a posting involving run of the mill knife or the like and someone chimes in 4 years later to say "Yeah, me too!" then that isn't exactly something we need. We have 1.5 million threads in here with 15 million posts. There's been a problem in the past with people finding the oldest possible threads, and bumping them back up to the top by adding in low content replies. The purpose behind this infraction is to keep the signal to noise ratio as high as possible.

Thanks, seems like a logical approach. Is there a way to pass that on to the people who are responsible for enforcing that?

^ I think you needn't be worrying about this...they know already! ;)

Thanks. The reason I bring it up is because I've seen it on far more than one occasion where someone will bump a thread for something stupid and then multiple people will post up to date relevant info on the topic and the mods lock it because of the original stupid post. I don't see why it'd need to be locked if there's an obvious renewed interest in the topic. Seems like it'd keep 500 threads on the same topic spanning 10 years or more at a minimum, keeping white noise down and a historical perspective of the thread topic. This isn't my house and I'm not claiming it is. I was seeking clarification and what Spark said made sense. It just happens to kind of conflict with what's being done. Not a big deal either way. I'm not a mod.

What is better and even easier is to start a new thread, link the old thread for those that may want to read it, instead of forcing people to read through a topic that has been put to rest for over a decade. It must have been a big enough deal for you to come here and start a topic on it, so there you have it. The renewed interest is better served with a fresh discussion, with a link to what has happened previously. Things can change quickly in the world of knives, there has been huge change and exponential growth over the last 5 years alone. If people want to read the historical (older) threads, there are there still available in the archives. Make no mistake bodog, there is no conflict here other than what you may end up stirring.
Exactly.

You are correct, KELAMA. We already know how to handle these issues and if something obscure comes up, we have ways of dealing with it to so that the right moves are made.

I agree with op. Sometimes no matter what you do folks are mad. Open a new thread and you should have searched. Resurrect an old thread and your still wrong. It's confusing.

You can't always count on everyone being happy with what you do.
Situations are often confusing.
It's called "life," and we just have to deal with it. Not really a big deal at all.

When you can't make everyone happy, it is the MOD's opinion that you should be concerned with. Having a thread locked is no big deal if you don't get any infractions. Just learn from the experience and move on.
