These three apprentices tell me they will be making khukuris such as the ones they are holding. "Someday, Bena, someday. You just wait and see."

I believe them. They are hard workers and learning fast.

Khukuri FAQ

It is a universal truth: it is with the young that the future rests. Which is a frightening thought when I think about some of the young people I see here in the United States.

Thanks again, Steven, for another PM chuckle.

These boys are dead serious about becoming journeymen. Two of these boys sleep in the shop. They are ready to open the doors at any hour a kami might show up which is sometimes 4AM. It is a win-win situation. They get to live rent free and we get free night watchmen. Our guard dog, a stray puppy we took in, is the friendliest dog I ever saw. He never barks at anybody and would not bite if you beat him. Typical HI watchdog -- make friends with everybody.

Khukuri FAQ

It sounds like the watchdog is familiar with the old saying that the best way to destroy your enemy is to make him/her your friend. Good dog!

Steven, why do a few kids with green and purple hair and body piercings scare you more than looking in the mirror and realizing our forumites' own generation is responsible for what's happening in the world today? And that Vampire Gerbil, me, and Jim March are moderators?

Sure you can trust the government. Ask any Indian.

Hello, Uncle Bill

How old are these men? How long have they been training? How long do they need?

The young are indeed the future. From what you say Uncle Bill the future is looking good for HI. Thanks for a small glimpse of the future.

Green, purple, blue, red - My daughter has a friend in college who has gone through most of the rainbow. She's only done 2 colors so far. Dad's cool with that. Body piercings - uh, ok - not enthusiastic about it, but ok - if they want to. Tatoos - same thing (as long as they're aware of the consequences). Sometimes it's hard not switching into preacher mode at these minor things. I'm learning along with my kids.

It's true, if you look into the mirror you'll see who's responsible for the mess we're in. Maybe our kids will be smarter and better than we have been.

Rusty, your point is well made and well taken. However, we must not confuse insanity with ignorance. Guys our (age 50-ish) may be crazy, but we're still on top of things -- for the most part. However, for the first time in this nation's history, the younger generation is less well educated than the generation that came before (according to virtually all measurements of educational attainment). Try having a discussion about current events with a youngster today; it's scary. And when you look at the voting record of young people, you really have to worry about where their apathy is going to lead. Some of my biker pals are degenerate, lost souls who come close to being criminally insane, yet they carry on intelligent discussions about significant issues. Which leads me back to an earlier point: insanity is not to be confused with ignorance. I question the sanity of a substantial number of my fellow forumites; but, without a doubt, this group is among the most well-informed that it has ever been my pleasure to encounter.

(Wow, I really got on my soapbox about this one -- you can tell it's been a rough day.)

No soapbox, Steven, just calling it the way you see it.

These boys are in their late teens and in another year or two they will be making their first khukuris. They are good boys and have their heads screwed on the right way.
