Good question. I'm in CA and while we have messed up gun laws our knife laws aren't too bad. You can carry conceled any size folder you want or you can carry openly any size fixed blade. Just no conceled fixed blades.

That depends on where you are in California. In Berkeley you can't carry anything that's worth carrying. See, for example:

You know the expression: When 3" blades are outlawed, only outlaws will have 3" blades. Not to mention 21" Chitlangis and the like.

It's probably lawful to carry a 6" screwdriver. Just make sure to have some loose screws at home to back up your story. [Pun intended]

The city ordinance does allow exceptions if an implement is needed for your profession. Unfortunately, self defense is not considered a profession.
 
Is chopping up muggers and druggies classified as a profession?

What do you do for a living? "I walk around and wait until someone tries to mug me, then surprise 'em and loot the body!" :D
 
I hope we see that Vala again sometime soon. Preferably before my wife spends my tax return:p
