Maglight is now offering their own l.e.d. flashlights and upgrade modules.
I went to three Wal-marts Monday before I finally found one for my three C cell maglight.

The replacement led looks alot like the bulb thats already in the flashlight. As you might guess, this makes the replacement of the incan bulb with the led super simple.

I haven't used my light alot since the new led was installed, but the light from the led was very white, just a very little purple-blue tinge around the cenral spot, which is how I like it focused.
It really makes the factory bulb look weak.

Price was a little over eighteen dollars before tax. I'm happy so far.Patrick

I bought one (dont remember brand name) for my 3 cell and was horribly disappointed. I have Chi-Com single cell AA lights that are brighter than the Mag mod I got.
What brand did you use ?

They just came out.
The led is being sold by Maglight, for Maglights. Wal-mart should have them, the led flashlights and the led modules.Patrick

I saw a Nite-Ize version (for 2 to 6 Dcell) for about the same price as the one for the AA mini mag. I wonder if it is as good/better than the ones from Mag Instrument themselves?

Performance is nothing short of DISMAL! The beam quality and its intensity (if that' s what you want to call it) is no better than a single AA cell CMG Infinity Ultra. Got mine at Targets for $10. Got my $10 back from Targets. :)

YEA, but there's a prob with the Luxeon..the heat has NO WHERE to go..it ends up cooking itself and it's built in thermal regulator will just kep cutting down power..(looong thread on CPF)
I say, do a REAL mag mod with a heat sink and a luxeon..

YEA, but there's a problem with a REAL mag mod with a heat sink and a luxeon..where do you start?

Search around on CPF looking for a dealer of the parts you need, then hope you can get ahold of them, then order the parts, and pay for them, and the shipping. How much is that going to cost?
Now what tools (if any) for the mod?
Any returns allowed if you lose the luxeon lottery?

How much performance gain do you get over the simple Mag-lite drop-in, especially in normal real life usage?

The Mag-lite Luxeon does not cook itself to death because it's built in thermal regulator will just keep cutting down power, but still allow usable light..(looong thread on CPF).

I'm fooling with you a little GarageBoy, but I think for most people, driving over to wal-mart and picking up one of the led drop-ins is a pretty easy way to update their old mag-light, mine is over twenty years old:) .Patrick

Well, you buy from a reputable dealer for a decent lux. $15 for a o sink and lux together. 3 Cells direct drive makes for a NICE bright light that dims slowly over many hours..

You remove the switch with a 5/64" hex screw once your pop off the rubber cover, drop it out the rear end, chop off the bulb tower, solder two wires to the switch, reinsert the switch and hold it there..
Attach the LED to the o sink with the thermal epoxy. Solder the Lux to the switch (remember polarity) apply thermal grease to the o sink and pop it in
