He's the young Newari man I mentioned in an earlier post and I can't remember his name. He takes his time and does excellent work. He holds a partially carved handle in his hand.

Incidentally, who is the lucky fellow getting the bottom khukuri in the top pix?

Glad you like the pix, Harry, since I've got plenty left to post.

Don't know who got that bottom khukuri -- several were on order, but if you want one let me know.

Khukuri FAQ

Uncle Bill, what style khukuri is that on the bottom and what's the cost? I received my carved-handled khuk a while back and was so very impressed with the quality of the carving that at some point in the future I would like to get another. What impressed me so much about this young man's work is the well-defined detail and depth of the carving. Through the years I've had numerous carved items ranging from pistol grips to pocket knives and much of the carving was cut so shallow that it wore smooth after just a little use. The carving on my khuk, however, could withstand as much use as a non-carved handle and still retain all its detail.

I highly recommend this fellow's work to any forumite even remotely considering a carved handle.

These are really special Khukuris (seems like I'm saying that more and more these days).

Someday, funds permitting, I really must have one of these.

Thanks for aggravating my HIKV with all the great pictures Uncle Bill!

Steven, I think that's a Gelbu Special but wouldn't swear to it. If it is the cost is $175 as shown.

This young man belongs to the Newari caste that does carving. It is in their genes and it shows. He does excellent work and is a frequent visitor to BirGorkha. His home is just a five minute walk so it is very easy for him to drop by, ask questions, and then resume his work. He is a very nice young man and I liked him a lot.

Bill, how much would an 18" WWII with a wooden handle that is carved like the bottom one cost? I was originally thinking of saving up for one with a regular horn handle, but the carving won me over.

Uncle Bill, how about giving us a blanket cost for adding a carved handle (like the bottom khuk) to a standard khukuri model. I would be very interested in getting a carved-handled 18th Century and a carved-handled Foward Curving Khuk.
