Yeah, it's another one of those: "what would you carry if.." threads.

Humor me.

I was thinking that I have a toolbox full of 30 pounds of wrenches, hammers, and so on, a 150 pc socket set, and some other tools, all for slightly different circumstances.

And yet, I am looking for one knife that will fulfill all my requirements from "hard use" to opening envelopes.

The idea that one knife can do everything I want it to do is a bit like expecting a wrench to work as a hammer: it can, but a hammer works better.

I'm looking at the possibility of carrying two, maybe three knives, each intended to address different aspects of cutting, or whatever else I need to do with them.

I thought that I would pick the collective brain of the Bladforums membership, looking at what all of you carry, or would carry.

HTM Gun Hammer in M390, small SAK, and a fixed blade of some sort, for me. Nothing else makes into my rotation these days.

I recommend a small SAK (Rambler or Classic Vic) for your keychain, a full sized SAK, traditional slip-joint or multitool, and a clipped one-hander (or small fixed-blade) suitable for your day. My one-handers are frequently swapped out, but here's my 'core' set-up:

Three works for me! :p

Good luck, OP! :)

Small sebenza,xm-18 3 inch slicer non flipper and Demko ad-10 in m390.

Leatherman wave - for the general utility.

ESEE izula 2 - for the main EDC blade.

and a traditional knife of some kind....let's go with my latest addition, GEC lockback with burnt stag handles - for people friendly or dressy occasions.

Benchmade 741 onslaught
Piranha fingerling
Original style sak
Some times a guard father spike for the heck of it around the house

Your circumstances can dictate what works best for you, but if you are carrying multiple knives then you probably have different tasks or categories of cutting in mind. I've thought about this and thus sometimes I carry 3 blades with me:

1. My primary folder of about 3.5" size, for my cutting use.
2. A blade in a multitool, usually I am carrying a Leatherman Juice or a Leatherman Charge. I'm carrying it for the tools other than the blade but having a blade is a useful backup.
3. A small lower priced knife. Mine is either a Byrd SE Hawkbill or a Spyderco SE Ladybug. I am experimenting with carrying a full SE blade to see if it offers any benefits for me, and if I am carrying it and someone wants to borrow a knife I would lend them one of these.

Other thoughts I've had involve carrying a small fixed blade of 1095 or similar steel. This would be in case I needed a knife to use as a sharpened pry bar or small chisel, hence the selection of 1095 steel. I think such a knife in a suitable small sheath, maximum overall length of 6.5", could fit in my jeans pockets and work for EDC.

I've got the multitool angle covered with some other pocket pieces.

I've been looking at the Tops mini-pry knife for the "everything else", and Ritter mini-grip in yellow for EDC. The thing about the Ritter is that it could successfully stand in regular and dress occaisions, because it's size and color combination make it look more like a tool, and less like a knife. Call it the "SAK Effect", if you want to.

Although I may take Crimsonfalcon up on the offer in his sig line.

Anybody out there have an alternate to the Ritter? Maybe below the eighty dollar mark?

Oh, and, I'm just not a fan of SAK's, or Spydercos. Sorry, fellas

1. Swiss army knife-full sized
2. Buck 110
3. Benchmade Griptilian 550 or Chris Reeve Sebenza

in my opinion these 3 knives, simple as they are can cover most if not all thrown at them

1. SAK Handyman
2. Hinderer XM-18 3.5"
3. Demko AD-10/Demko 4Max/Demko AD-10 Fixed blade(as long as I have one of Andrew's blades on my, don't really care which one). I now have the AD-10 fixed blade in my edc bag and will be edcing the 4Max in conjunction with the above.
