A place around the corner from me is having an estate/yard sale, as the folks that lived there recently passed away and the kids are getting ready to put it on the market. I really didn't need anything, but sometime can find something worth dragging home. No such luck this time, and as I was leaving one of the ladies asked if there was something I was looking for in particular. I mentioned some tools and "old pocketknives" and she perked up. She said her dad had a couple knives, and they put them away with the lighters so the kids wouldn't get into them.

They brought out a baggie with four pocket knives, three of which you see here, and another old bartenders knife with a broken blade and cell scales; all gone to rust. That one hit the trash, but the others are nice little watch pocket blades like every old guy I grew up with carried. The Imperial and Ranger hardly look used, but I'll bet the old man carried that little Buck a fair amount. (It was the only one with pocket fuzz inside.)

They'll get a drop of oil and a new edge, and off into the drawers they go. If nothing else they won't have to deal with the celluloid degassing...

Nice knives there I'd have been happy to get as well.

I especially like the BUCK 309, and the little imperial jack.

And at $5 a piece those are definitely great scores, buck stopped making the 309.

Nice score!

It has been suggested to me that a good rule of thumb for garage sailing is to ask if they have any pocket knives laying around as many people who have them don't think to put them out with the rest of the stuff. I've never tried it as I don't do much garage sailing but it makes sense.

Great score!
Did you pick up any of the early series Zippo lighters that were in that baggie with the knives? :)

I don't smoke, and never thought to ask.

It's funny, when I was in Boy Scouts I had a Zippo in my pocket all the time. Nobody seemed to think it was going to be a problem back in the 70's.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I quit smoking 11 year ago.
I still think a Zippo (or even a Bic disposable) starts a camp fire or the BB-Q grill easier than a flint 'n steel though, so I keep one around for that.

Great score for $15! Those are my type of deals.

My favorite kinda knives, if you had to replace them today at MSRP it woulda set ya back at least $100. If you have a good eye and know your knife history, you could build a heck of a traditional collection for that same $100 if you only stuck to yard/estate sales and flea markets. Congrats, great score.

Great score ! I used to always ask as well when I stopped at a sale. I have not done one in years now.
