Been a long while since I've been able to get any photos up (despite promising to
) (Bad scruff)
Well this weekend we took a bit of a wonder exploring the local woods again. Its a long strip of interlinking woodland, that runs on either side of the Holme Valley in West Yorkshire (famous for a TV show about daft old men - I think even you guys stateside may have even heard of it?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_of_the_Summer_Wine).
There's no major elevations or extreme wilderness but still beats being sat indoors!
Its was about 4 Celsius (that's about 40 Fahrenheit), with the wind and when the sun was behind cloud it certainly felt a few degrees colder. But, it was certainly great weather to be out.
Here are a load of naff photo's in which I can make you all feel incredibly jealous about out beautiful countryside
Accompanying my good self was my 'special' bro known as Earl and Spam, the UK champion at talking a glass eye to sleep. He actually managed not to scare off all the wildlife.
The first section of woodland I've shown before I think, its quite narrow but long and has some interesting areas we'd previously not discovered.
Bit of Polypore for Spam
The strong winds over the past few weeks have brought down some real large branches and left some real widow makers hanging. Thankfully they seem to be away from the major paths.
Found some Jew's Ear, a good size one here, but it was a little past it
"Ssssthay what sonny?!"
We all went on our ar$e$ to get down to this newly re-enforced old mill sluice :grumpy:
Found an interesting culvert?
What are those ungainly creatures....
No...these ones?!
See white blobs (my zoom is limited
) but you can just about make out two Heron(s?).
And here's one in the distance....again...you need to squint.
I know, I should really be shortlisted for some Birding Photography prize this year!
Some nice potential brew stops for future reference
And another odd creation half hewn into the rock
"Why is this here?"
After stopping off at the farm shop for Steak & Guiness Pies, Sausaage Rolls and Vanilla Slices (yeah we really rough it!),
we headed to the second much larger woodland and found a glut of Horse Hoof or Tinder fungus (aka. Fomes fomentarius).
I was chatting with Spam about it and he talked to Earl about its anatomy, how to process it and its uses.
Am sure I remembered seeing mistwalker posting about lighting it 'raw' so I got my new toy out and gave it a blast
Bingo! The Exotac uses a much softer ferrocium mix than I'm used to on my Fireflash, so it took a few strokes to work out the correct angle at which NOT to shave off a load of it at a time
Checked out our old coffee spot to see what the water levels were like. It seemed a lot more exposed than I remembered what with all the trees being bare.
We continued on and climbed to the top of the woods to check out the ridge of boulders.
On the way Spam and I had been talking about the best method to get to remove he outer skin on the Horses Hoof to get to the SpAmadou and I had joking suggested putting it on the sanding belt. Well, we thought we'd try the neolithic belt sander...
They weren't huge but they lined the ridge on this side of the valley and head some nice features for future bouldering at least according to Earl
Rain water had collected in a small pool on top of the 'sanding stone'
And the view onwards down the Holme Valley
And back towards Victoria Tower a folly on Castle Hill
There was a load of gauze here too...the flowers, past their best here, are edible, but I think they're really dry. These critters must like em though
And finally, as Spam pointed out "You can't have three men, in the Holme Valley, without a bath!"
Earl was all too eager to get down to his skivvies
Thanks for looking folks.
Stay well
