Three small choppers, ATAX-Uluchet-Skatchet

Thanks very much! I must admit that I'm intrigued by the uluchet. What sort of mechanism is employed to extend the handle? Do you have to remove a bolt, slide the handle out, then replace the bolt?

Thanks again.

Dances,

Please pardon my delay in answering. I'm on the road and have had some difficulty getting net access.

The Uluchet handle is extended by slightly pulling it apart, then counterrotating the halves until they are once again in a position to lock together. The handles lock together with an integral plastic pin. No bolts have to be removed.

Thanks very much Howard! That sounds like a better system than I envisioned. Knowing me, any parts I had to remove would be dropped and lost!

Interesting commentary Howard. In regards to the Uluchet, it is a fine tool indeed, performing well as a small hatchet. It also doesn't throw off the "weapon" vibe that a large knife does, which can make it possible to carry in a lot of places that a large knife would be far too troublesome.

Howard, is the ATAX desiged to be used with two poles for the handle?

Cliff,

If you don't mind my answering, the handle can be made by splitting a single piece of wood, or bending over a piece of green wood. Using two pieces would take more time than needed, and would probably be harder to stabilize against the ATAX.

Using plastic pipe ties works very well for lashing if you have them with you. If not, any kind of natural cordage made of strong enough materials (i.e. cattail stalks, milkweed stalks) will work well to hold the handle to the blade.

Hope this helps.

Brian.
