I am thinking of which knife to make an everyday carry, but which would be best for the woods. The Rucksack is large and has a locking blade and saw. The Huntsman has saw,2 blades and scissors. The farmer, I dont own one but every ones talks about it. I have the Rucksack and Hunstman. Why the farmer over the other two?

For a "woods only" SAK I would go with the Rucksack, the only thing a Farmer has over it, is an awl that is nicer to use, for hole drilling.
That being said, my farmer is my EDC, and always comes to the woods with me.
And you need to buy one NOW.

The Rucksack is a great woods knife. It's my backpacking knife of choice. I think the Farmer gets more attention because it is a better EDC for any environment because of it's size. Also the alox scales gives it a better "feel" then the plastic or celluloid scales.

Thanks Hawkings. Like I said, I already own a Rucksack and it does have an awl, actually it has everything the farmer has, its just bigger and with a locking blade. I have a Huntsman on order with a sheath for only 19.00. I thought it would be a good deal, so I bought 2 huntsmans for me and my daughters boyfriend for Christmas. He doesnt have much of a family life and I feel sorry for the kid. Anyway I dont have the farmer yet. I collect Swiss Army knives and thats one I dont have. The reason the Huntsman has got my attention is because it has everything the farmer has plus a pair of scissors. I think Ill tote the Rucksack. Thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Tomcrx, I havent thought of the alox scales. Now i understand. Its for the size of everyday carry. I can see were it would be more popular. I heard that the blade of the farmer is more robust than other SAKs, is that true? Merry Christmas to you also.

The blades are thicker. The older ones had thicker liners also whereas the newer alox models have the same liners as the traditional SAKS. In truth I have always preferred the thinner blades because they were better slicers and carvers. I think if you collect and like SAK's you owe yourself to get one. Not because they are better, but rather they have become a kind of the de'riguer badge of a hardcore SAK lover.

Your right tomcrx, i just need to go ahead an order one. I am a collector. Jake, the deluxe tinker doesnt have a saw on it. I know, i have one. Its a great knife but to me if your gonna have a woods SAK, then it must have a saw. The swiss champ is just a little to big for me. The perfect SAK to carry, for me, would be one with 2 blades, saw, scissors, magnifying glass, and the rest of the normal stuff.

No love for the Huntsman? Mine was my edc (and only knife) from the age of 12 to about 28 before I began trying other knives. Everything you need for woods or town. I have since moved on to favor multitools for edc (Vic Spirit), but my original Huntsman from 1982 is still going strong after all these years.

I have the Bundeswehr OH Trekker, Red Farmer and pre-hook Huntsman.

I carried the Huntsman for a lot of years before becoming a knife guy and still EDC it sometimes. The Farmer is part of my outdoors kit so its always with me in the woods. The OH GAK I like a lot but the plade play sometimes bothers me

I EDC the Vic OutRider, has a few more tools than the Rucksack like scissors so it is a little more handy.

I just noticed now that you can buy a carry pouch with a sharpening steel built on the side of it. Now that is nice to have.

One handed Trekker!

I wish they made OH Outrider too, and that they came with pocket clips. It's not hard to add one, but it'd be nice it it was already there.

O I completely agree. I know the Deluxe tinker has no saw (gave one to my grampaw) That's why I suggested the Fieldmaster and Farmer first. Doh! I didn't see that the OP wanted it for woods work. I think my ultimate SAK would be a farmer with scissors, and a philips head screw driver.

for edc the huntsman or even better the super tinker has a better set of tools for day 2 day activities... the beauty of the farmer is it is small has an efficient selection of woods tools, and the alox scales make it Tough.. the ruck sack is great but it is big and hard to pocket...might as well pocket a 110...I also find myself needing tweezers, scissors a small blade and a screwdriver much more in day to day activities than the other stuff..if we're talking woods roaming than a saw is clutch.

Jake, I agree with you on the Fieldmaster. I would like to have that phillips screw driver also. I havent thought of that. I do wish the SAKs came with a pocket clip. That would solve alot of my carrying problems. I love my Rucksack and I do wish it had a small blade along with the large blade. Man I love Victorinox.

took the words right out of my mouth! for sure the one handed trekker! the only problem with it is there isnt enough plain edge on the knife but the wave serrations asorry i meant to quote the one handed trekker comment
