"Thrice Honoured Moon": The Mystery of the Nepalese Inscribed Khukuris

Beoram, very interesting, am digesting the information, will have to go back for more :) I followed the various discussions in the other forums, but it is neat to see them all encapsulated in a concise manner like this. Thanks!

Thank you very much Beoram for pulling this together, as I recall as early as c.2003 your "guessmates" & deductions have turned out to be the correct & proven ones in the end!

Yes, many thanks for putting this all together, for all involved. Several years ago on vacation we stopped at the Atlanta Cutlery showroom, and my father and I each picked out a khukri from a box to buy. We were outside wiping the thick layer of cosmoline from them when I discovered an inscription on the spine of mine. I brought it back inside and asked whether anyone there might be able to read it.

After a few minutes of bustling from room to room, a lady came back and wrote out the inscription phonetically for me. As I remember, she wrote "Shree Chand (I think she pronounced Chand with a bit more of an "sh" sound) Indra Dhuj". There may have been another syllable in between; I forget now- "dra" maybe? And now I see there was an Indradhoj battalion in the lists. At the time, she postulated that maybe Indra Dhuj was the soldier's name, but it's nice to learn the history of my piece more fully now.

Hi the possum,

Do you have any photos of your AC khukuri?

Chand or Chandra should be pronounced with the "ch" of "cheese". (same thing with "chakra"; I suppose people think it's sounds more exotic with "sh"...)

I think I have a lousy pic that might just work...
