Thrift Shop Mystery Axe

Prior to getting married and having a kid I collected guns. These days my budget precludes guns but does allow me to buy random stuff at garage sales and thrift shops. If you guys are interested I can make a post with the various axes (and knives, my Wusthof collection is coming along nicely, and I found a $3 spyderco yesterday) I have come up with this summer, from what I can find some of them are pretty neat. Others I expect will be just very good to learn how to clean up.

In any case this particular axe has me pretty stumped and I figured if nothing else you might be able to add a bit more information then my neophyte observations can provide.

The axe itself is solid, seems to be a little old but not like old old, to my eye at least. Hopefully the pictures show you what I mean.

My assumption is that it's some sort of costume piece. It looks like it is bronze(?) and doesn't seem to have tool marks on it post casting. So I would be surprised if it was ever intended to be used for anything other then putting in a belt and walking around Høstfest.

That said it has a really, trying to find the right words to describe this, I'm going to go with pleasingly murderous feel to it. The shape, heft, and balance all make it feel very unlike any other hatchet I've ever owned. Which I would imagine is the point, but my experience with reproductions of things is that they often look good, but don't also feel good. Or maybe I should say, feel as good as it looks.

Then again, as I mentioned at the start here, I've long been a gun guy, so spending $1-5 for an axe and toying around with it is all new to me.

In any case, thanks for your anything you might be able to add.

Looks like a bronze tourist replica of a Norwegian 17th-century battle axe. They have that weird bent neck to them.

Excellent, I think you are spot on. Thank you!

I expect that someone probably did in fact pick this up at some Norske Hostfest of years past. Folks around here really like it, I've never been but it does look like fun.
