i just started learning to throw knives, i got the idea that it might be possible with enough force to throw a knife into a car tire, has this ever been done? does anyone know anything about this kind of thing? i do understand it would need to be whipped at the tire pretty hard and it would need to be the sidewall. honestly i just want to know if its ever been claimed yet and if not why not?

Lot to unpack. Are we talking about actual throwing knives? Knives typically meant to be thrown are going to be weighted in such a way as to facilitate the end over end toss that is required to consistently throw a knife. Are we talking about throwing a knife into a tire that is moving attached to a vehicle? Why is this being desired? A regular sedan tire is probably thinner than an all wheel drive 4x4 tire. With the requisite force and weight I am sure this has been done I just don't know why someone would be looking to do it unless that was all they had as a makeshift target in their back yard.

There's a sub-forum here at Bladeforums dedicated to throwing knives, and knife throwing- https://www.bladeforums.com/forums/throwing-knives-knife-throwing.722/

As far as car tires, I bought a Kershaw model 4007 boot knife several years ago, and at first I was disappointed with how thin the tip was, I thought that it might be easily broken. But then someone provided me with a Youtube video of a guy torture testing one, and it held up to everything he did to it with just some slight bending of the tip. One of the things he did with his knife was repeatedly throw it at a car tire.

He was a good thrower, and the knife easily penetrated the sidewall of the tire. I found this to be an impressive demonstration as the knife is very light, and he threw it from a fair distance.

That video changed my mind about the knife.

All that being said, I can't think of any good reason for throwing a knife at a car tire 🤔. Even for recreational target throwing I would think that there are better target materials to choose from. I have this vision of a guy throwing a knife at a car tire, and instead of sticking, the knife bounces off, flies back, and sticks in him.

Probably possible, if you stand close enough and throw hard enough.

But I would not risk getting a sharp pointy throwing knife bouncing back at me standing that close, using that force..

I am pretty sure that you are more likely to have the knife bounce off and stick in your forehead.

I was once assigned to cut rubber truck tires apart into weird shapes, and I found them to be darn tough and unyielding. Even tougher when they were pressured up on a rim. I learned that if any street punk ever threatens to slash your tires with a flimsy little switchblade, the proper response is to chuckle and make yourself comfortable. Optional to make some comment like, "Hope you brought a big lunch..."

I shot an arrow at a tire once when I was a kid.

The phrase, "You'll put your eye out", was going through my poor youthful head as the arrow bounced off the tire and headed back in my direction.

Don’t start with steel belted radials. Harry McEvoy wrote one of the better books on knife throwing. It is available in paperback. I don’t recall if there was a chapter on tire penetration.
