i never leave home without at least 1 large bladed knife on my person and i decided it was time to jump on the bandwagon and get a commander

when i got it home i loved the chisel grind but soon grew to hate the recurve blade ( every knife i own is a tanto style blade)
after some serious use for 2 weeks it came time to touch up the edge so i called emerson knives and asked what degree bevel they use and they said 30 degrees so i set my spyderco sharpmaker 204 to the 30 degree slots and went about putting a new edge on my commander only with Plss poor results i would work the ground side until there was a slight burr on the flat side and lightly knock the burr of with 2 light strokes of the fine white hone and it was dull and a butterknife .
so i went out and bought a 600 grit diamond rod tried that with no luck at all made things worse . to make a lond story short i got so PlSSED that i threw the damn thing in the trash without a second thought
i love the CQC7 tanto desighn if i get that will i have the same sharpening trouble that i did with my commander ?? please advise me on weither its worth h\getting the cqc7 i have a cqc6 my dad bought when the cqc6 was first intoduced to the public that i've done some custom work to and its now my dress knife i really want a cqc7 but is it easier to shapen?

Well, "Tactical One," run out to your trashcan and grab that Commander, I shall pay you $50.00 for your suffering plus shipping and you send the Trashcan Commander to me, I will have it shaving in 10 minutes on the same equipment.

Not trying to piss you off, it just seems that you are blaming the knife for a lack of sharpening skills or patience on your part.

Dude!! You threw away a Commander because you couldn't sharpen it?!?!?
Tell you what, next time you go to the range and shoot crappy groups with a Glock, SIG or AR let me know. I'll be waiting by your trashcan!

Tactical One,
Welcome to BladeForums and the Pool Hall of the Usual Suspects (The Emerson Forum).

However, I have to say that posting that you threw away a Commander is like Running into a Biker Bar and saying you drove your Harley into the lake because you could not tune-up the engine.

You'll get a alot of blank stares...

Then maybe this is all a joke -- anybody that that throws away a $150 knife must garner a comfortable living, Perhaps in a profession that requires insightful and effective communication. Such a wealthy man would, of course, use logic and knowledge in his daily actions.

Heyz, The Tactical One,
That was a pity...you need more patience. Start practising sharpening recurved blades using a cheap knife, then slowly, when you have finally mastered the art of doing so, then start on more costly blades like the Commander,

Oh man...pardon me saying, but that was a dumb move...you could always have paid a little to get a professional to resharpen it for you if you really screwed up real bad... Why waste a good knife just like that?!

Dave Ellis here-My suggestion is to go out and buy a good set of crock sticks, they are very efficient for sharpening recurve blades.
If using sharpewning stones be sure to run off of the edge of the stone and change the angle to hit all of the recurve,
Hope this helps,

Mr. Ellis,

The Spyderco Sharpener he was using, I have a Sharpmaker and I know it is set up that way, apparently has the Crock Stick Configuration...

I think the answer is for Beginners, until they get the hang of it, is to "paint" the edge with a black magic marker and use that along with a ceramic or diamond rod/stick/stone and go about it free hand slowly and with patience. Simply and slowly, methodically, "brushing" away the ink...getting the burr on the flat and stropping it off.

I honestly don't know how this evades some people. I think alot of them are making the "Classic Mistake" with the Chisel Grind and that is removing too much steel, going too fast or using too much pressure as I did starting out...

Taking the burr off with the sharpmaker was the first mistake. Read da faqing Emerson sharpening FAQ thingy. Or send me the knife for cryin out loud... I'll pay shipping and five bucks. Hey, you'll be getting more out of it than if it's in the trash. :P

i have a CQC7, and while it will sharpen up fine for defensive use, as far as getting it razor a$$ sharp, forget it - i have a BM stryker chisel grind, and dont have this prob w/it - i dont know what it is about emerson, i just cant get it like i want it no matter what i do - my bud has a commander w/out chisel edge and it sharpens up fine - maybe its just me - but i find it strange i can get all my other knives hair poppin sharp w/no probs while the CQC7 is impossible - like i said ya can get it sharp enuff, but not sharp like i like them...have bought a GATCO, DMT, and other stuff just for the CQC7, but still no luck - what am i doing wrong???by the way sent to emerson too for sharpening and when i got it back was it razor sharp? no...BUT - am i gonna throw it away?? NO

I have two Commnaders and a CQC7. The one Commander I have sharpened a number of times and use it regularly. I also find it much more difficult to sharpen than my other knives. I am not sure why it is difficult.

The best sharpening I have now found to be done with an EZE Lap M. Try it as I think you will find it to work quite well.

I have not been able to get the blade back to a hair popping sharpness as it originally came from the factory however. The first time it needed sharpening, I sent it back to Emerson. It came back to me not as sharp as when it was brand new.

I have yet to find the secret to giving the Commander the razor sharp edge it had when it was brand spanking new.
