I`ve been asked to make a thrower that can do double duty as a utility/survival knife.I am going to make a simple utility shape, with a para cord wrapped handle and no guard.I have some 3/16"x1 1/2" L6 which I think would be appropriate for this application,I also have some 1095,which would be better?I know I`ll have to go real hot when I temper but how hot?Should I go till the blade turns blue?
Also,at what point in the blade should the balance point be?
I`ve never made a thrower before so I need all the help I can get,any information you guys could give me would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott

scott, throwers are not heat treated 99% of the time. too brittle, the tips snap off. also that way you can bring the edge/point back easy, as far as balance is concerned there are lots of diff, schools on this. does he want to throw by the handle for a 360? or throw by the blade for a 1 1/2 turn?

Scott, I don't anything about throughing a knife,(I've thrown a few, but not stuck many) but for as blade steel, go with the L-6, edge holding is about the same as 1095, but it is much, much tougher.

I would temper around 375deg.F 3 times at 2 hours a shot. If it's edge quenched, it should be vertualy indestructable. I've tested a lot of L-6 blades and it is the toughest steel I've ever seen. If anything can handle full hardness as a thrower, properly heatreated L-6 can. One of my test blades frome L-6 was bent 90deg. over a dozen times, anougther was used as a chissel cutting slots into thick wall PVC with a 3 pound hammer on the but.
