I just found this wondeful forum after a little guidance by another member and I hope you guys can point me in the right direction.
We're having a school/church carnival in a few months and I have volunteered to operate a knife throwing booth. I plan to make a human shaped form out of balloons and then attach them to a large wood surface and the people will pay to throw knives around the balloons, and the ones who get the closest hits without breaking any balloons will win a prize.
I would like to learn something about how to throw a knife accurately and what sort of knife to look for to do this. I'm also wondering about the surface for the balloons - should it be vertical or leaning back a bit? what sort of wood would be best to throw at and have the knives stick in easily yet hold up for 4 days of knives being stuck into it without falling apart?
Being for charity and run by a school, we don't have the money to buy a bunch of expensive knives, so I'm wondering if there are any really cheap alternatives that will work. Does a throwing knife have some special characteristics? The ones I've seen on TV just look big and with fairly wide blades.
As for throwing, are there any tips to get a novice started? How far away should the thrower be from the target? Does one throw handle first or blade first? I need to learn enough to be able to demonstrate the activity (somewhat accurately) to the fair visitors. Can I do this in just a couple of months?
I appreciate any advice that anyone can offer. Thanks a lot in advance.
