Throwing Tops Knives?

My brother recently got a Tops Tom Brown Tracker which he is looking forward to throwing at things. He's already had me throw it some, and it seems to be holding up okay so far. The instruction booklet the knife came with only mentions throwing in part of one brief sentence at the front; that the tracker can be thrown like a tomahawk.

I'm thinking of getting a Tops Steel Eagle 111A with a Hunters blade for myself:

It's the big one at the bottom next to the sheath.

I do intend to throw the knife, as well as use it for other stuff. My question is, do you guys think it will hold up well to repeated throwing? How would you rate the Tops 1095 steel and linen mycarta handles?

I wouldnt worry about throwing any knife, as long as the warranty will cover it. For instance, I plan on throwing my Battle Rat. If somehow it broke (not bloody likely) Swamp Rat would fix or replace it. So if Tops has an unlimited warranty, go for it. If not, well. . . you could get a battle rat and a nice sheath with some money left over for that price. ;)

Knives optimized for cutting are hardened to retain an edge.

Knives optimized for chopping have a hardened edge and a back kept softer to absorb shock.

Knives optimized for throwing may have a relatively sharp, hardened point but the rest of the knife should be soft to absorb shock.

Throwing knives aren't really knives. They are knife-shaped darts. Knives like those from TOPS being high carbon steel can probably take the stress slightly better than many stainless steels. But thinking that the use of the knife shown in The Hunted is in any way proper for a working tool is just wrong.

What the reason to throw knife? From my perspective it is almost same things as throwing handgun.

Really, why - for selfdefence? for fun? for what?

Thanks, Vassili.

Wouldn't be throwin' it for my hard earned $300. The blade would be pretty prone to chipping, and I'd hate to miss the target and lose forementioned knife.

If ya' want somethin' to throw I'd suggest taking a look at the tomahawks at Ragweed Forge or HB Forge.

OTOH, if TOPS wants to represent it as a knife designed to be thrown I guess we can all safely guess that they'll honor the warranty if someone busts the knife to hell by throwing it.
