hello, i'm new to posting on these forums but a have been a long time reader. I first got into tomahakws when i began to throw knives. i soon found that i loved to throw them even better then my knives, and soon i was much better with a tomahawk. i love to take them backpacking, hiking, and to meet my little sisters boyfriend (joking). soon i realized that they are the ultimate menas of recreation, practical tools, peaces of art and fierce weapons. i own a set of three shawnee's (my main throwing set), a nice spike hawk from beaver bill and several cheap iinternet and mail order buys. i throw most often from two spins at around thirty feet and can stick my hawks from three spins somewhere around 50 ft. (i never actualy measured the distance). i was just curiouse what expeirances, distances, style etc.other people threw at. also what type of hawks they throw. someday i owuld love to get my hand on an RMJ hawk but money is scarce right now. my next purchase will probably be a rogers or a VTAC, i was also considering two hawks thrower, or possibly a hammer pole from H&B, any suggestions? thanks.

Hey pikey30,
I like Mr. Keelers hawks best, as you've mentioned! There are some very nice custom throwing hawks out there, but man the f`n $$$$ most of them want!!!.. This is, after all, a recreational passtime....[although, i must admit fantisizing about 'scull sticking' my daughters "Boe"] :p ... Just kidding Kristen...

Anyway, I usually get extra handles with my hawks or is most often the case, make them myself. I favor Beaver Bill, because of his stout forging method and balanced heads. They all are so damn near the same in demention and feel. Makes the throwing process a real joy and relaxing and consistent recereation... Incidentialy, I also have one of his excellent 1750's reproduction pipe~hawks... This is a real JEM! I got the upgraded Osage handle with it and always bring it to the local WPB, FL knife shows for a sort of 'show and tell' item... Folks love it! ..

Dont count your chickens on ever getting a RMJ ;) I was lucky to have a friend that sold me his one...

Over on www.axeforum.com Don "Krag" Halter makes some really awesome stuff...his prices are quite good too so maybe you could look into getting something from him? in either case I dont throw my hawks, because everyone I own is too valueable to throw, but H&B do seem like the place for me to get a cheap throwing hawk...and I know from friends that they are of great quality.

Sunnyd,
I couldn’t agree with you more about Bill Keeler. your hawk looks great. Good luck with “Boe”, maybe you will get lucky and find him down range one day (joking). Have you ever competed? I was really hoping to get to some events next year even if only to meet other throwers.

Robert B,
Thanks for the info, I’m looking into his work. I would love to get something from him. You should get your hands on something from H&B, you really can’t come close to anything better for the money, especially if your going to throw it and he’s a super nice guy. You should try throwing, it’s a lot of fun.

i like to throw 1 & 1/2's , i practice 1's & 2's alot, the throwing distance depends on the axe, they rotate at diff speeds.

big 2 handed double bit axes are fun to throw.. i hope to get one soon ;/

um er.. if you havent thrown a 1.5 get halfway between a 1 & a 2 rotation mark & then aim the bit backwards over your shoulder, then throw normal

those are hard to do..

yes, axes are much easier to stick than knives :p

supertartd-

tomahawk throwing is a littiel different then axe throwing, but i do throw 1 1/2 turns with a my hawks both from side arm and overhand. i like to throw 4 and try and make a star pattern, each with a handle sticking out at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. my favorite distance is from 2 spins, i throw from 3 for ha ha's and i can stick me hawks consisitantly but i am not very accurate. what type of axes do you throw? i would love to try it some day.

Hey pikey30 & Gang,

I just love this thread! Please post some photo's of your throwing events! I will try and do the same. Nothing quite like sticking a few?? Is there?? Please understand we are not talking tournaments here, just the relaxing, kick back, back yard, sticking funnnnnnn we all know & luv!

Abundant Blessings to you all!!

Anthony

i just throw cheap axes & hatchets till i can afford something better :/

my target is a small log with an eye-hook screwed into it & covered with leather roped up to a tree branch

and another rope for a tether to the ground so it dont spin

not a very good target tho, cuz you have to stick it real solid or the log moves & the axe falls out

still better than nothing..

oh, and my son has some sorta hurlbat thing he bought off ebay, at first i thought it was goofy, but its actually quite fun to throw..
