thumb flicking your sebenza... warranty question?

(it just occured to me that this thread, and my stat history in general may be hurting my chances of a sale in the exchange. I mentioned, all within a short period, getting my first sebenza (the annual for sale) and then i start a thread regarding thumb flicking and warranties. I just want to be clear that the one spoke about being able to thumb flick is NOT the one for sale. I describe the one for sale is barely used and that's what it is. when i purchased my first sebenza i had two others in my poccession that were borrowed from a friend. just thought i'd drop in a pic or what I'm holding now. 4 Sebenzas but only 2 of which i own. They're all awesome btw. thank you)

Today's date is 3/18/09

so i've heard from many sources that wrist flicking deployment with your Sebenza is considered abuse and might void your warranty. I can understand easily why this method of deployment is unnecessary and can even be abuse depending on the user's method.

My inquiry is pretty simple... I am absolutely certain that (like many others), I can thumb flick my Sebenza easily without involving my wrist in anyway.

I'm curious if CRK would consider this method of deployment abuse? I know we're dealing with a pretty gray area here considering all things, but I'd still like to know what CRK considers proper handling.

In my opinion, I can't imagine damaging or abusing my Sebenza by thumb flicking it, but... of course, i am a brand new to the Sebenza world and I'm sure have much to learn.

Thumb flick it gently open to your hearts' content, you'll never hurt it.

Hard wrist slam opening will [eventually] probably cause problems down the road on any folder..

I've been thumb-flicking my '99 Lg Seb for ten years, no worries:

I don't think anyone has heard of a warranty issue regarding too much thumb flicking.

Kind of what I assumed but it's good to hear! Thanks for the reply.

Wow - I got my first Sebbie a few weeks ago - a large Classic - a local gun store had it on their shelves since its birthday in 08. Given the tightness of the lock and the shape of the thumb stud I do not think I could flick mine without some real effort!

Well like I said in my post I'm no expert, but I would have to guess that if your knife was sitting for a couple years it could probably use a little bit of grease.

If you have a lot of experience thumb flicking I think you should be able to flick open any Sebenza. There are some really great videos on how to take it down, clean it and grease it.

I'll just say though almost every instructional video I've seen fails to mention a warning of over tightening the screws. You will strip them.

Good luck to you. And congrats in your new Sebenza!

Just got the Insingo with the new washers and it is smoother than the other two Sebs I've had out of the box. Very easy to flick with a thumb. Anyway somewhere on here is CRK's official response about flicking

I can't thumb flick mine but I have read that it can take a while to get to that point. I read a post where an owner said it took years for his knife to break in to the point where it could be easily thumb flicked. Mine opens very easily and smoothly but will not open all the way with just the thumb flick. I could probably use better lube but its not worth the effort and it makes no difference to me.

Not sure if this is getting too off topic but... Have any pics of that insingo? I'd love to see them.

Probably would be a good idea to take it down, clean and lube it
with your favorite lube if has been sitting for a couple years.

Would start the break-in process right, and should be smoother.

Just for a drill - These have been known to arrive from vendors with
pinched washers etc. Would give you some peace of mind and give you
a chance to get to know your new knife.

I bought a small seb about 2 weeks ago, and it took a good week to week and a half to break in nicely. I couldn't even dream of flicking it at the beginning but its much smoother now.

if a company considers wrsit flicking abuse then the knives arent worth using.
that being siad without a doubt CRK is NOT one of those companies.

I think CR might have gotten tired of fixing stupidity.
IF you do spend a lot of time flicking AND there is damage, AND you send it CRK to get fixed, they'll fix it, but you'll get charged.
(I think that's how it works)
So... flick if you like, just be prepared to pay the repair bill if you flick too much or too hard.

The gentleman above said, he's been flicking his Sebenza for 10 years without problems. Like him, i don't think it's stupid to open a high quality, titanium handled, frame lock knife by flicking it open with my thumb.

the point of this thread was not only to make the huge distinction between wrist flicking and thumb flicking, but to inquire and verify that thumb flicking is neither damaging or warranty voiding, and furthermore is not considered to be abuse by CRK experts and more importantly Chris Reeve Knives.

I think after having collectively read a well rounded group of opinions it'd be safe to say, that if in fact you are capable of thumb flicking, without moving your wrist in the slightest way, it will neither damage your knife or void its warranty.

and btw, i happen to find the physics of opening my Sebenza by thumb flicking, aesthetically pleasing... and I'm not talking about sitting on the couch constantly flicking, i'm talking about taking out my knife, flicking it open, and using it as a cutting tool.

I think i'm not alone in that notion.

When I say stupidity, I'm not referring to most of you guys. I think I made that distinction.
I'm talking about the mullet heads that think his Sebbie is supposed to open like an auto!

Looks like a healthy discussion to me, no offense taken here.

My Lg '99 Seb is used fairly hard, and I'm happy to report it is
still in top shape. In my little world we call this "paid for itself".
Even the lockbar is still in the 75% range it was when new.

As more and more existing Sebs pass the 10 year mark,
(something I'd guess any knife maker would be proud of),
it will be interesting to see how CRK handles servicing them.
I believe they will continue their excellent service record.

Anyway it's all gravy for me and this Seb from here on out.
Wouldn't surprise me to get another 10 years out of it though.

-And I'll keep on thumb-flicking..

(Using a camera left-handed while flicking is harder than it looks)

hey now that you say so, especially with with the "mullet head" reference it is seen in a much different light. And I appreciate your response. I guess the combination of "... fixing stupidity" and what seemed like a thumb flicking warning at the end of your comment got me a little bit confused.

Anyway, sorry if I seemed to come back defensive. Thanks for your comments.

It's the internet! Sometimes you write things that don't convey the exact message you want to convey! :o
It was probably my fault.
party on.
