thumb stud cutout haters...

Hey guys first off let me introduce myself as I'm not normally seen around these parts. My name is Ryan an I'm just now getting to the CR level of knife accumulating and am soon going to be picking up my first sebenza. However I cannot decide if I would like a large 21 or a large regular and heres why:

Throughout my whole time accumulating knives I have always not liked when makers incorporated a big cutout on the frame for the thumb stud and easier closing(ie. the classic and 21). I feel that when there is less of a cutout it feels much more ergonomic and feels better when doing actual work with the knife. However I see a ton a people on here really like the 21 frame and speak of it as being superior. I do realize that the cutout makes it much easier to close with gloves on but then again I probably only wear gloves 5% of the time I use a knife.

So the main question is: Is there anyone here that had the same philosophy as me in that they did not like the feel of thumb cutouts and thought that they would not like the feel of the 21, but when they got it they changed there mind and thought that it felt good? I really love the lines and chamfering of the 21 but feel that the regular will fit me better. Any one?

I personally like the ridges on the regular better because
it gives me a much better grip on the knife when cutting,
particularly when the knife gets slimey. No issue closing.

But I know I'm a minority on this.

When i first got a Sebenza, i had to "learn" how to open it with the thumbstud. I've owned many folders prior to the Sebbie so I'm not completely new to knives, but the Sebbie is a little different. I think the cutout helps with getting the correct angle and leverage to open the knife a little more easily. Just my opinion though.

Different strokes for different folks. I really prefer the Classic/21 cutouts from an ergonomic point of view, although the grip isn't quite as good. The difference in how easily I can open and close the knife matters more to me than the regular's grip...

The funny thing is that I would take a guess (a WAG, at that) that Chris Reeve disagrees! He started with the "classic"/original config...then migrated to the regular...brought back the XX/21 only because of customer pressure....and when he intro'd the Umnumzaan, what did he do - doesn't it look a lot more like a "regular" than a classic??? :D We're lucky that he has good hearing, else you and I'd be SOL? ;)

I do have to say that I couldn't get anywhere near "hate" either way, though!

I prefer little to no cutout for a thumbstud. That said, somehow, I completely prefer the 21 to the Reg.

My exact sentiments on the matter. I prefer the regular in all ways over the 21/classic aside from accessibility of the thumb stud and lockbar, which is ultimately most important.

I've always liked the regular, especially in the small.
The large cutout works better on the large size Sebe than on the small size.

That being said, both of mine, large and small are regular models. My preference.

I prefer the large cutout. I find it really makes the knife easy to open and close one handed. Havent had a regular, but I prefer the look of the 21 anyways. Each to their own

i agree, i like the regular the best and the ridges are just great, they look cool and are functional.

I have always liked the regular profile overall. My main reason for liking the regular over the 21 is blade profile. To me, the 21 blade profile is too pointy, while the regular has some belly to it and I like that. I have always found the handle of the regular to be more comfortable all around than the handle of the 21. I do like the larger cutout, but it is not a must fo me. It does aid it opening, but the regular opens great also. I do like the grippyness of the regular more also.

Awesome thanks everyone for all your opinion. I'm still not 100% sold on what I'll start with yet but I think I'll probably end up with a large regular. Maybe I'll get both and sell one...

Regulars have been o/p for about two years now, so I wouldn't dawdle if you want to buy one new. There are plenty of pre-owned Sebenzas that pass through the for sale section, however.

I'm like the op. I don't like knives with large cutouts next to the lock. I've had a couple of liners with these cutouts close on me during use. I know a sebenza won't close, it's still a psychological thing though.
