Thumb stud pain

Hi All,

Forgive me is this question is silly. I'm new to knives and just got my first Sebenza/Knife yesterday. Its the large 21 Insingo, and I'm loving everything about it except one thing--My thumb gets sore sometimes when opening the blade with the stud. Has anyone else experienced this with the Sebenza? Is it me as a new Knife owner or is the the new knife that needs to break in?

Thanks in advance for the feedback. I'm really getting into this hobby and can see myself getting another Sebenza!

It gets easier or your thumb gets tougher ;) They are a little stiff when new but will break in nicely.

And congratulations on picking a great knife!

I feel your pain Maxx. I bought a Umnumzaan a couple of months ago or so, and I wasn't liking it (except the beauty) because of the break in period and pain/frustration. Not only for the knife but also my thumb. I knew it needed time, and I was assured by the folks on this forum that I'd made a great choice and would love the CRK. I even broke down the knife twice polishing and lubing it and noticed some better action, in fact it was smooth. Personally I found out there is technique in the mechanics of the blade opening. A skill, so to speak, that develops within the painful failures...if this make any sense. I'm really a Spyderco guy with some of their top end knives, but I've been only carrying my Umnumzaan since I've learned how to open it with the developed technique. It will happen.

The same thing happened to me when i first started opening CRK's. If you can, try and take a break from opening it for like 4-5 days. You'll be amazed at how better your thumb feels after this time.

You and the knife will break in perfectly. Give it a week or two. And take it apart and assemble to become one.

Man,... this is some deep stuff! Good to know you guys experienced the same thing. Alrighty then. I will stay the course until my Sebenza and I are one with the universe.

Make sure you are pushing the stud out the right way. It's intended to go out away from the knife a little bit, where as the zaan is supposed to go more parallel with the handle. IIRC.

For me technique was key. First, I had to take care not to push on the lockbar. Second, instead of pushing on the thumb stud, I now put my thumb mostly on the blade and push against the stud. Hard to describe, but it makes a difference.

I forgot to mention that biggy.

I had the same issue. Some nice soul here told me the sebbie is a just bit different. They told me not to push so much straight up (as compared to other knives) and to push more up and out (kind of toward 10 o'clock, assuming the opened blade is 12 o'clock. Immediately I had much more success. Between that and breaking in the knife over a few days, the 'problem' was solved. Congratulations on the new knife!

Maxx, as you said "stay the course". The Sebenza will break in, your thumb will get used to it and you will prefect the right opening motion for you within a few days. BTW my first CRK/Sebenza was a large Insingo. Its a terrific knife. Quite sure you will be very happy with that purchase.
