Thumb Stud Replacement: Blade Damage Risk

So I'm considering sending in my damascus 21 for a stud swap. There is understandably a disclaimer for potential blade cracking or damage during this process. How many here have had this service done? I was wondering if the chance of this was either somewhat widespread or pretty rare and the disclaimer was more or less a CYA.

I have had 3 sebenzas sent back to have double studs put in. None have been on Damascus though. All three did not have any damage. Knives include large regular, and 2 large 21s

Seems like the damascus would have an even lower risk because of the softer heat treat.

While I am sure the risk is pretty low, for what you are attempting to do(just get a new blue stud), I don't think it is worth money or risk. The new blue will just wear off unless this is a show piece. I have had a few std. blades done with no problem.
I didn't know they would even do a Damascus 21

If you just need the stud re-anodized, that can be done without removal if you know some tricks😉

It's a user. And I've actually grown to like the look of the worn blue. But I've found a safer alternative to a stud swap anyway.

Yep. Polishing that blue off the first week I got it was definitely a "doh" moment.

I have had studs successfully replaced a couple of times, but I am not sure I would risk it on a Damascus blade. So you polished off the blue? I personally think that silver studs look better with Damascus anyways!

I thought I'd like it better too. It just hasn't grown on me like I thought it would. And I regret it every time I look at my other plains with worn blue ti and pictures on here of damascus with blue. I have a CGG ladder damascus one that looks perfect with silver hardware but on the PJ, seeing that worn blue just makes it.

FWIW, the only CRK blade I have had crack at the thumbstud was Damascus. Albeit this happened when the knife was in my possession, not when getting a stud swap. My original DT Raindrop blade cracked and CRK swapped it for a CN Raindrop blade under warranty. Honestly, I liked the DT blade better as the etch was much deeper, but life is life.

I remember reading about that in the Damascus EDC thread. That was just determined to be a bad stroke of luck inherent to the press fit method and had nothing to do with usage or it being damascus if I recall, right?

Yeah. The knife just cracked out of the blue. It was just a tolerance issue and nothing to do with hard usage or anything untoward on my part. CRK replaced it no questions and the knife has seen far more use with the new CN blade than it ever did with the DT blade, as the thumbstud crack happened early into ownership. Maybe 8 months in?
