Thumbstud as bottleopener

I carry a small plain sebenza and have on occasion opened a bottle cap using the tip of the thumbstud. This can be done holding the closed knife in your right hand(with a right handed knife)cradled in your fingers while the thumb of your same hand hooks arround the neck of the bottle. This could be a fairly efficient alternative bottle opener if the stud did not taper into a cone shape, but rather it had some sort of small hook or lip that was unnoticeable in the typical opening and closing of the knife. This method of bottle opening seems to have such good potential that I wondered if a thumbstud could be made to accomodate such a proceedure. Has anybody else tried this or do you think it would work? It would seem that a small item such as the stud could be changed or available without causing any noticeable difference to the appearance or opening of the knife, while providing a relative efficient backup bottle opener.

I think you have become confused. Tomorrow is Independence Day not April Fools Day. :p :p

Bottle opener on a knife?

Yeesh. You'd get along well with Jerry Busse. ;)

Sure the idea of a bottle opener on a knife is no new thing. SAK mean anything to you? But to desecrate a Sebbie thumbstud in that manner is outrageous and unconscionable. :p :p :D ;)

maximus otter,

The excellant, excellant Galil rifle had a bottle opener installed on it's bipod as they found that ammo feeding failures were attributed to lips of magazines being distorted/damaged by opening, hugmm, soda-pop bottles.
;) That's what I call real-world engineering. Many knives have what is known as a "blade catcher" on the aft section of the spine. I do not know what the furture holds but I can well predict that I have a better chance of needing to open a non-twist off beer bottle in the foreseable future than I have a chance of needing a blade catcher in a knife dual. Be that as it may, I need a beer bottle opener, err, I mean blade catcher on more of my knives. Keep in mind that if Corona starts making twist offs or if clerks in beer stores stop dropping cases of bottled beer on top of eachother then everyone can just ignore the foregoing. :D

Now there ya go, that's what I'm talking about.

Thanks Nimrod, I couldn't agree more with the respect being shown to the sebbie, but I think just a very small modification to the thumbstud would allow it to grab the spurs of the bottle cap and you could pry the little bugger right off of there and never bring the first mar to the sebenza. It's just that the cone shape of the stud will not allow good purchase on the cap, and consequently you can get kinda thirsty and frustrated trying to get that right;)
The type of alteration that would need to be done would not have to be all that noticeable I don't think. It might even be able to work by making a very slight cut into the tip of the current stud. I know, I know that would be disrespectful, and I know I don't have the right tools to do something like that, but if it were done in house it might be pretty useful.

Yes I heard that also! How dumb eh? Your life depends on the rifle working and you use it like that? :barf: Reminds me of my freinds who are in the British army and rarely if ever worry about cleaning the SA80 or having a sharp knife/bayonette...:barf: Its only the most important bit of kit in a battle after the human brain... No wonder most soldiers are dumb...:p
