Thumbstud opening Cryo G10

I'd like to ask for some recommendations on a knife which is like the Cryo G10, but can actually open well with the thumbstuds. I just got the Cryo G10 yesterday and can't do it. I read tons of reviews and people mentioned this but it seemed like some folks were still able to. I like the flipper but really wanted an assisted knife that opens well with left or right hand thumbstud. So here's what I mean:

1. Price: Up to $100
2. Access: Assisted Thumbstud, Flipper is okay but thumbstud is a must
3. Blade shape: Love the Cryo shape, not a big Tanto fan, my friend has the Blur so I'm trying to one up him!
4. Blade length: 2.75" to 3.375" or so
5. Blade steel: 8Cr13MoV is okay, no complaints about better!
6. Closing: I can barely reach the lockbar to close the Cryo, a more exposed one would be great.
7. Weight: 3.5 - 4.0 oz or lighter is ideal but up to 5 oz for bigger blades
8. Made In: USA or Import is okay

Anyways, thanks in advance for your opinions.

Ed

Blur, especially in S30V or Elmax. Best budget thumbstud assisted opener on the market.

You could also look into the SOG Aegis or Flash series, but their build quality is not in the same league as even an import Kershaw, let alone one of their USA made models.

I believe Ontario makes an assisted model of the Rat I now as well. Haven't heard much about the assisted version but the manual one is a frequently recommended budget knife around here.

I had the same problem with the Cryo, if I opened it with the thumbstud the blade opened partially and came back at my thumb.
Also like you mentioned the lockbar, same here...

Not AO but a take a look at the BM Griptilian, flies open like an assisted en is ambidextrous with the axis lock ;)

I would say a zt0566, once you de assist it. Blade stops act great as thumbstuds once you take out the torsion bar. Its a little over budget at around $120, but basically a bigger cryo with better everything.

Sorry, just realized you are specifically looking for AO. I stand by the 0566, but the elmax blurs and benchmade 580 barrage might be looking into as well.

Thanks alot for the suggestions. I looked at all of them.

The ones below look really good. They look like they can be opened by left or right thumbstud. Can they be closed one handed too? In the reviews, I can't tell for sure. That would be a plus. Also came across the SOG Flashback, any thoughts on this? Thanks again.

1. SOG Flash II, $40
2. Benchmade Mini Griptillian $90
3. Benchmade Mini Barrage 585, $120
4. SOG Flashback, $60

Kershaw Knockout.

If you get an Axis lock knife, I'd recommend getting a manual one. Assisted and auto takes the fun out of the Axis.

The only knife on your list I can comment on is the SOG flash 2. I had one and gave it away. It felt flimsy and there was quite a bit of blade play.

I don't like AO's but I held a new Blur the other day. Best AO I've ever played with. Felt great, everything smooth. I'd buy one.

I am wondering if you have ever owned an assisted opening knife with only a thumbstud?

I am asking because I have tried to like two of them--one was the Blur and the other the Random Task. Both were failures for me. They are both great knives, but I have a bad habit of following through the sweeping action used on a non-assisted knife and I end up cutting open my thumb! I have tried and tried and I keep cutting myself. I sold both knives.

The flipper opening assisted knives are a godsend for me! They have saved my thumb!!!

Daniel,

The only AO knife I've got is the Gerber Crucial FAST, which works good but you have to push really hard to undo the safety lock. I have cut myself a time or two! My friend has a Blur which I've tried and it seems pretty easy opening. I just really like the thumb flicking motion instead of the flipper. But i definitely agree the flipper is alot safer.

I own both the Kershaw Leek and Blur. Both assisted with thumb studs. The Leek has both flipper and stud. Both great knives for the money. I also own a SOG Mini Aegis, but it's not as good as the Kershaws IMO. I had a SOG Flash 1 but sold it because it felt cheap and had a lot of blade play side to side.

I agree. Horrible play in all directions and feels cheap.
