I just HAD to change my thumbstud on my new Insingo. I love this knife the blade is a killer.
Break in has always been hard for me in the past, but now I just can't open it with the factory stud. I installed a Benchmade stud and I can now open it with reasonable effort, until I break it in and return the factory stud.(it's pretty'er)
See shots of my brass punch made for this job. (doesn't scratch stud)
See stud in place.
See scars of surgery from thumb jount rebuild.(arthritus)

Sorry to hear about your hand. That sucks. Do what works for you and what is comfortable. No matter how it looks. My Insingo has glow in the dark stickers, orange backspacer to make it more 'mine' and as long as it works for you. Do it.
