Thundersom kevlar finishing?

Good afternoon everyone.

Received a custom folder just the other day and I've been really pleased with the whole deal...eeeexept for the Kevlar. Now, the finish feels very rough to me, with threads loose when you hold it up to the light. It doesn't pop and show the weave like other scales I have seen on these forums.

Is it just the quality of that batch? Can I polish it or add a finish to get the final pop? If so, what grit progression or polish would you recomend? could not find many resources online, and had hoped you guys could help out.

Thanks!

Ben Tendick (BRT Bladeworks) is the exclusive supplier of the material. He recommends using a q tip to wiggle off the loose threads and finishing with a very high grit sandpaper.

It does not ship finished, so the final result is dependent on the level of finish that the knifemaker used.

Appreciate that, thanks!

Included a picture.

I would describe that as un-optimized.

For comparison, here is a piece I had:

If you choose to handsand the material, I would strongly advise wearing respiratory protection.

I agree completely, that is closer to what I was expecting. I sent the maker and email asking what grit he left off at, see if I can go from there while keeping the scale as flush as possible.

Thanks again

It doesn't really matter where he left off. I would simply start it at 120 to ensure uniformity of finish and move up to 400 - 600 and then on to white and black scotchbrite pads. Wear a mask and spend some time on it I bet it will get prettier.

Yah! It was pretty easy, straped some sandpaper on a block and just went to town like you said. 120-600-1200-2000 then soaked it in mineral oil for an hour. Took it to my 6 micron strop for a finial polish. Cleaned up nicely with some wd40 and an additional soak.

Looks good! The material definitely looks better the higher grit you go. I find 2000 grit then buff works well.
