Do you have to remove the original anodization before re-anodizing? I have a ti handled knife that is anodized (at least I assume it is) in a green and brown tiger stripe pattern and I'd like to redo in bronze. Do you have to remove the old before putting on the new?

I believe that you do need to remove your existing ano . The reason being that bronze comes before green in the ano scale. I am no expert so seek a 2nd opinion before you go stripping your knife handle.

Try scotchbrite pads. If you have a belt sander or a disc sander you can look for scotchbrite belts in the appropriate size. I think it might be available for bench grinders too.

Scotch Brite gets most of it but you'll have a satin finish.

You can use Whink stain remover https://www.whink.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=cEcommerce.Product&ProductID=4328
This stuff will take all of the old anodizing off but it does have Hydro-flouric acid which in certain instances can be very dangerous.
Here's some info on Hydro-Flouric http://web.utk.edu/~ehss/training/has.pdf
Please read up on how to handle it properly (at no time can it come into contact with skin) Literally 10 to 30 seconds will wipe the ano'd titanium pretty clean.
Just let it soak and watch it bubble... Literally, it bubbles.
Not only will it leave the Ti clean but it will remove all oxide layers off the the surface. When the surface is that clean, you get brilliant deep colors!
I picked some up at Walmart :D Once you pull it from the acid bath, neutralize it in distilled water for at least 30 seconds and you should
be good to go!
