TI Military lockup concern

So I loved my Sage 2 so much I had to get the TI Mili, she just arrived today and what a sweet knife I must say! I have a concern though when the blade is locked open the lock bar (with stainless insert) only contacts the blade tang in a very small spot. I shined my light inside with blade locked and see a < of light... This can't be normal can it? My sage 2 lock bar fully contacts the blade tang.

I know man, don't have a digital cam though. Only about 1mm of the lock bar contacts the blade... the lock bar goes over the tang about 50% but only about 1mm of the lock bar contacts the tang (the top portion of the lock bar only) If i shine the light into the handle (lock bar side) I can see a V of light coming out between lock bar and tang (can see from outside looking under pocket clip). Also with the blade closed when looking at the tang there is only a dot where it contacts the tang. Sorry if this doesn't help i'll try to get ahold of a cam.

You don't need a digital camera. A well lit cell phone pic would help a lot more than a generic description. Snap a picture with your phone, text message it to your email address, upload it to photobucket and you are done.

This sounds normal to me. The Sage 2 blade would contact the entire face of the lock bar. The Military's lock bar would have to contact a smaller surface area because only the insert would be touching, not the entire lock bar.

This is just speculation, I only have a Sage 2 in front of me and not the new ti Millie :(

taken with my macbook sorta suck but you can see now... thanks

I don't think it is normal because only a nub of the stainless contacts... maybe bad tang grind?

That's normal. It's a difference in design philosophy. Some knives have the lock bar cut at an angle so that it only contacts the tang at the furthest point from the pivot, maximizing the benefits of leverage (and it's probably easier to make this way). If the lock bar contacts the tang along its entire width then you sometimes have potential for the side furthest from the pivot to wear faster and produce vertical blade play (the lock would have to contact almost directly underneath the pivot to do that, but you would be surprised how close to the pivot many locks are).

^^^Exactly. Beat me to it. It's nothing to worry about -- like Joshua J. says, it's designed to be that way and is perfectly normal.

Cool, this makes me feel better :) ... seams like it would wear faster or not really? What can I say LOL you guy's know how it is getting something new and hawk eyeing it :D thanks for the info guy's.

Yeah, the rate of wear will be a bit higher due to the contact being spread over a smaller surface area, but honestly unless you're obsessively opening and closing your knife just for fun, it generally won't be an issue. Particularly for something like the Ti Millie with the hardened steel lockbar insert, wear should be even less of an issue.

Much better, improvisation always works in a pinch. That looks about normal to me, that lock ain't going anywhere.

Maybe, but remember that the contact on this one is now steel on steel rather than titanium on steel, and the insert is factory-replaceable if needed.

Absolutely normal. When I first got my ti millie, the lock up was considerably earlier than yours. When I say early, I mean just the width of the ss insert was making contact with the tang..it's at about 40% now
