Which one is better to have, with or without the lockbar insert?

They were released without, then it was decided it would be better for a longer lasting knife. If you find one without, it might make a nice collectors piece. The insert increases the life of the Ti lock.

I had both and kept the one with the insert. The lock on the other one was very sticky and did not improve after many openings. The tang of the mili blade has a steep curve and IMO does not mate up well with a thick lockbar. The narrower bar on the insert seems to work better.

i don't own a pure ti lockbar. my question is, why shouldn't a ti lockbar be flicked too often?

As far as I know, flicking puts increased stress on the stop pin, not the lockbar. I think too much is made of the negative effects of flicking. There are plenty of assisted openers out there as well as auto and auto axis. And Spyderco's new Southard folder with a flipper!

It may also affect the lockbar if the lockbar seats more deeply when wrist-flicked than when opened normally. There would presumably be more pressure on the lockbar face when you unlock the blade, causing accelerated wear on the lockbar.

My Sebenzas, ZT 301, Sage 2, Speedform, and a couple of custom Ti framelocks don't have the inserts in them, and they're fine. I wouldn't worry about it unless it maybe involves some super steel at higher than usual HRC (like the M4 Military, which is why I think they decided to use the insert).

note that strain on the stop pin. but with regard to the lock-bar and tang, i'm afraid there's no such thing as a "soft" opening for a framelock. the lock bar really comes down hard on the tang each time.

The Sebenza has a hardened lock interface. If you take it apart you'll see that it has been treated. Unless this is done, Ti will remain much softer than the hardened blade steel and it will deform given enough time with repeated openings.
