Ti Salsa question for Sal or Carlos?

My Ti Salsa came today and since I had not seen any of the Salsa's before I was favorably impressed (like the new box too;)).

The quality and fit 'n finish is maybe not as good as the best Spydies ever but still seems excellent. The blade grind on mine is a bit rough (vertical lines) but even and typically Spyderco sharp. My blade is a bit off center when closed (first time that's ever happened with a Spydie) and while the lock up is good it's not as good as the Compression Lock was on my Gunting. I actually expected it to lock up tighter being 'almost' a frame lock (I have Reeve, Mayo, Ralph framelocks and they have always been the most solid folders to me).

My question is; there seems to be a definate stop or hitch in the closing process? If you are gently closing the blade it 'stops' at about 80% closed and has to be pushed through a detent to close all the way. Is this the blade catching on the 'detent' for the mono-lock? Is this normal or should I consider sending it home to be looked at?

A suggestion too;) This is a knife that begs for Boron Carbide! I've heard Sal has a BC coated Millie and I have the parts for my large plain Sebbie off at Bodycote right now:cool: I'd be sooooooo tempted to send the frame/slabs and maybe the Cobra Hood off for coating! Now that would be sweet (and probably more durable too)!

This is normal. The resistance you feel is the engagement of the ball detent. If you peek into the back of the Salsa with the blade partially open, you can see the ball detent on the side of the tip of the lock lever (close to the anvil pin.)

I've already bugged Sal about boron carbide coating the Ti Salsa. I believe he's looking into having a few samples created for evaluation.

I just looked and that's pretty cool. I had to look close, that's one small ball. Also the blade grind I thought was due to the resharpening of the Ti's for the initial barrell bolt problem.

First off, Hi Lanny, it was good to meet you today, could have sat there all afternoon shooting the bull about knives. Thanks for the good deal on the Salsa, it is a nice design.

I like the new box as well, took a minute to get the clip off but it's gone now.

Now about that BC coating...

James

PS, Lanny, don't forget to bug Mike ;)
