Ti - Spydercard

I have always been very fond of the spydercard - and not only because I used to be a friend of the late Eduard B.

In the past I (along with other spyderholics) tried to persuade Sal to make a Ti handle version...

Big S always said it will be too expensive and can’t be justified commercially...

Well - isn't the new MT Option 2 a high end CC sized knife, sold for 90$ or so with a high-end handle material?

Is there a chance to ever see a Ti handle or CF handle on the Spydercard?

I would defiantly get one (or a few)

Anyone thinks the same way?

Hi Blilious. I appreciate your persistence. However, there are a few "commercial" facts if I may share;

MT's cc might be all that the high end market may bear. dividing that market, if it's small would be unfair to MT and not commercially viable for Spyderco.

The 9/11 "event" in the USA has made carrying a cc on an airplane a crime worthy of jail time. Most have quit trying to bring knives on airplanes, so the "market" for a "semi concealable" cc knife is greatly diminished.

The Bradichanski design, although unique is four years old and he is not around to update the design. We could do it, but we also have many onther ideas to grow. Seeing the smaller market makes the need for such an updated design less demanding.

SOG has also produced a "facsimile" of the Bradichanski design which further divides the market, especially to the novice, novelty knife buyer.

The Bradichanski CC sold in very high numbers for several years. now that the market has diminished and sales ae going down, it probably won't go for another year.

I don't think that we could produce a Ti CC with a good steel (VG-10) that could retail for $90.

I hope that helps.

Sal,

I hope you do not kill off the SpyderCard, that is one of the finest pocket knives made today as far as I'm concerned. I never purchased mine so I could take it on an airliner anyway, pre or post 9-11-01.

Ti would most certainly be a very nice thing as well as an optional money clip, but such is life. I have a SOG Access Card because I am a gadget freak for the most part...but I would not trade a half dozen SOGs for one SpyderCard, that's a fact. It cuts like a laser and it is so compact, it makes a great pocketknife without even considering insertion in a wallet. :)

Sal - thank you for your detailed and strait forward answer.

Yes - I am persistent - but you knew that already...

I know about the Sog - just didn’t want to waste good bites on it...its a copy - plain and simple, said it before and will say it again...and as much as I like other designs by Sog -this one is as close to a rip off as they get...sorry for the harsh language.

As for the small market, and the post 9/11 issue - I am in full agreement with you...still - as Don said - I wouldn't trade 10 other small gadgets for one Spydercard - the one knife that is always on your person...even when you carry ONLY your wallet..(not that I ever do cary only one knife...LOL)

Maybe it's time to get a few more and start upgrading them...

I've had a Spydercard in my wallet for amost 2 years, and I have grown to love it. My Spydercard and my Micra are the only two tools that I never leave the house without. I like the desgin much more than the similar concept on the Option II. If you don't have a Spydercard, buy one.

I've never had a problem with the Aus-6, but I can understand the desire for upgraded blade steel. Could somebody explain to me the reason for wanting a Ti handle?

Even in steel the handle on this knife weighs essentially nothing. A Ti handle would have to be significantly thicker to have the same strength, which would make it very hard to fit into your average wallet. Ti and CF are great in the right applications, but I don't think a credit card knife is one of these applications. If you are looking for a more classy appearance, try polishing off the bead blast finish to make it shiny.

Ti WILL be much lighter..You have to compare similar knives with and without Ti in order to appreciate the huge difference...

It will not have to be thicker...choosing the right version of Titanium - you can get all the strength you need in a very thin handle.

As for CF - I know less about CF - but I have seen versions of CF that were paper thin and yet strong enough..

Sal - what you are saying now is basically - Yes Blilious - you were right in asking me to build the Ti version...but now the MT have jumped on this wagon and the small market - it is no longer smart to do so....

May I say - "I told you so” without getting hit on the head the next time we meet??

You may always tell me "I told you so". although I don't think that we would have done near the volume with the more expensive version. I'm not sure MT is still making them.
