Ti-ZDP mini cyclone AO weakened?

This message is mostly for Tim and owners of the most amazing of cyclones. I am not what i would call and average user of my knives. they are all divided into two categories. those that get used hard, and those that get used harder.

Since purchasing my mini, it has become my permanent work EDC, where i use it from everything from opening around 1000 cardboard boxes daily, to chipping ice and scoring plastic laminated display posters.

not to mention the fact that the fact that i'm a kershaw addict means i flip my knives out of boredom or to relieve stress.

all of this together i have owned this knife for nearly a month and a half, and opened it probably 5 or 6 thousand times.

i have noticed from some other threads, that people have said the AO on the mini zdp was sticky at first but has since loosened, i seem to have the opposite problem whereby the AO seems to be slowing down, it now feels much slower than the beginning, and i am hoping that it is not something serious. i would simply send it in, and use one of my other 20 kershaws, but i am so attached, i doubt i could live without it. if it is just a torsion bar issue i think i would be comfortable swapping it out, but i was hoping to hear from the masses before doing anything. i have not touched the pivot screw or anything like that.

anyway,
hope to hear from other owners and you too Tim.

thanks,

Matt

p.s. thanks for all the help with the Ener-G2 Tim, it was my first real experience with kershaw CS and i can't praise it enough. beyond the innovation in design that sets kershaw apart, you guys are why i will be a customer and promoter for life! :)

With a knife that gets that much use, the first thing I would do is take it apart and make sure it is clean. Make sure to get all the pocket lint/carboard fuzz, and crud out of it. I have looked over some of the knives that we get in for warranty that have been used for years and have never been taken apart and cleaned. It would amaze you the amount of stuff that can build up in a folder.

After that if it still opens sluggishly, put in a request with the warranty department for a few torsion bars and try swaping it out.

If all that fails, you know what to do :D send her on in!

!

Tim, I know quite a few companies that void warranty if you take them apart.
Some peeps might be a little edgy/squeemish to do just that.
Some probably are may be just to timid to open it up thinking they may not put it back together. ;)

SPXTrader's Law: Go Ahead! Take Stuff Apart! What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Then, just when you start to remove the cover/lid/handle etc. springs, washers, screws, etc. will start flying around, they will always roll under the fridge/freezer/washer/dryer, etc. making them impossible to find...so for some, it might be best to send it back to Kershaw.

Slade, this is exactly why I realized I needed 2 MC Ti/ZDP...but I see you also have an ENER-G, so let it pull some weight for a week or so...

On the other hand , Kershaw is not going to care if you tried to fix your knife and couldn't. It is pretty darn hard to void a Kershaw warranty. Also it is a wonderful thing to try something new once in a while, it makes one feel good when you get it back together and you sit back and say, I can do This !!!!

i have to say, I'm perfectly comfortable taking apart a fixed blade knife held together with phillips head screws. I'd be cautious taking apart a folder, but I would be very cautious taking apart an AO folder. then again, im not very good at this sort of thing, most of you are probably better than I am at the reconstruction of taken apart things.

well. here goes nothing. ive just finished downloading a 30gig torrent of topgear, and now i believe its time to put on an episode and see whats what. i still have some blue loctite at work for the pivot screw tomorrow, but my real concern is lubrication, i still havent found anyone who carries stuff like militec-1 or any good dry lube, and im not sure it will work right after im done, but if not i am sure i could always use my black PE mini cyclone for a day, or my needs work, or my ener-g2, or my offset, or my sg2 blur, or my.....

but most of all i want my workhorse back and ready for action :)

ill re-post with the results.

Can you videotape this adventure and put it on You Tube? Then when you kick yourself in the nuts and set yourself on fire, we can all have a little chuckle!

J/K...good luck!

I stand corrected on the loctite issue. See Tim's post below. The man says a little goes a long way. So there you go.

and that's why i always have a subservient friend (for lack[ey] of a better word) around when I attempt to fix stuff (my main friends would be far too busy laughing and taking pictures of my dumb ass to help)

I am a firm believer in if you carry a knife that you should be able to disassemble it, clean it, and reassemble it.

Just like firearms. Could you imagine buying a brand new AR15 and shooting it and then sending it back to the company for them to clean it!:p

Just take your time the first time you do it, take pictures of it for reference or whatever. If you guys need some pointers feel free to ask. We do use blue loctite on all screws, a little goes a long way. You can get by with blowing some compressed air in there sometimes, but to do it right ya gotta take it apart.

so i got it apart, cleaned her up real nice, and then put her back together (twice, since it wasnt quite right the first time).

three flips later, the AO died. so i reopened it and here was what i found.

so it wasnt the torsion bar as i first thought, but rather the little metal piece connecting said bar to the blade. if you've never opened one of these up, here is a hint, there are one too many right angles in one of the pieces :)

so....tim?

thanks in advance.

Matt

Yah Dude, you got a broken torsion bar!! When they do break (some of them never seem to die!) you can feel what you just felt, other times they just go with no warning.
Put in a request and we will get some on the way to you.

.

YES, YES, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I've done so on many Kershaws which are the best in the industry for doing just that. Just take your time, and have a sense of humor

i sent in a request via the website using the customer service drop down?
was that right?

also, the grease inside was mostly black, but no fuzz or cardboard. i ordered some militecgrease today and ill hold off putting it back together until both parts and grease are in.

ill take pics completely dissassembled and various stages with something a little better than my iphone.

thanks all.

Matt
