According to the article, this is being done to commemorate the friendship between tha Dalai Lama and Muhammed Ali. The sand mandala is being constructed in the lobby of the American Life building (the "rusty building") at the entrance to the Belvedere at 5th and Main.

A mandala is a kind of sand painting, where colored sand is trickled from a funnel onto a canvas on the floor. It's almost a sculpture in that it is in three-dimensions.

My wife went to a sand mandala and performance by the monks a few years ago in Lewisburg WV. She said it was real neat.

Anybody who can get to see this, especially see it being done, go for it. They had one at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC years ago. Naturally, it was by the Tibetan exhibit in the Hall of Asian Peoples. :)

Fascinating process, beautiful results. The monks were sunshine personified with their happy smiles, but not very communicative.
