I've been reading old threads about this and have decided to treat two sets of clothing for use off trail with Permathrin from Sawyer. Any tips on application and frequency thereafter would be appreciated.

In addition to that, I'm going to buy a very high-quality tweezer without any barb or file marks on the ends. I also have a couple different tick keys with me at all times and a small mirror.

Tick season sneaks up on us so it's good to get a head start before one buries his in you.

Avoid the woods at all cost...ok that will last a week. I tend to just wear longer clothing and carry clear nail polish, have not had a problem. Also in past have burnt them off with stick from fire. (Not the best methods but effective in my low tick environment)

Yeah, its time for the nasty little things.

I live and hike in places with millions of ticks. When hiking i stay on the trails and avoid tall grass and brush. I wear long pants and carry a tick-remover thing in my FAK plus some tweezers.

Last year i discovered a tick on me 24 hours after id been on the hike. Somehow id missed it when i checked myself. It was placed on an awkward place on my lower back, so my girlfriend helped me remove it with some tweezers, but its little trunch broke off and remained embedded in my skin. Had to take my scalpel-like ZDP Endura and dig it out. Still have the little scar to prove it :D

I don't like the idea of Premethrin. I generally just liberally douse myself with DEET and I'm good to go, with reapplications every 4 hours.

In the mountains where I hike there's not many ticks. Or really many mosquitos.

At my house we have a lot of ticks in my hayfields and the woods. I always just watch for them.

Lyme is RARE here and I've never had a deer tick on me although I've seen them on deer I've killed so there's some around.

+1 for spraying permethrin on my "field clothes" the day before i need them.

Amateurs. I found a tick on me like 2 weeks ago. Long clothes and liberal amounts of permethrin or DEET do it. Usuaully I flick them as they're heading up my light colored pants which gives them away.

also, I don't know about ticks, but i have found that if you take odorless garlic pills the garlic coming when you sweat helps to keep misquotes at bay. I wouldn't go out with it alone, but i have found it to be very effective when mixed with traditional repellents

good luck :)

Dura-non on the outside layer, light colored clothes, long t-shirts. I deal with lots of ticks every spring and watched dura-non shrivel them up while still on my pants (turkey hunting). These are 99.9% wood ticks, not sure if I've ever had a deer tick on me.

Sawyers Permethrin works great!!

Get the quart spray bottle ( I get mine from REI) and spray it on according to directions. It works for 6-8 weeks. Still works after light rain contact but I would reapply after any washings or real drenchings. Unless your going through scrub brush country where brush comes in contact everywhere. You can generaly get away with just doing your trousers, and boots. I do my hat too in brush country.

Thanks! Some good reading here on DOD Chemical Protection System
