TiCN (Titanium Carbo-Nitride ) Coating Experiences for knives

I have the Cryo Ti and it has the coating. Its a nice coating that looks very nice, but will not stand up quite as hard as a coating like diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings.

Here you can see it has mostly kept its color

But here you can see that in the right light it shows a lot of scratching from use over time.

I have no experience of it on other knives or brands

I have a few Gerbers laying around for when I "need" to use a knife for something it wasn't intended and they have the Gerber TiCN coating on them. After tons of prying and other knife-blemishing tasks the finish has held up surprisingly well. That being said, it does seem to make the blade "glide" less when cutting. I think its a good, durable alternative to paint but on a stainless blade its mostly for looks if you're not in a humid environment. Slick, shiny blades make me not want to use them because they're almost too purty, so I like a coating that makes it look more utilitarian and less showroom-esque.

Personally, I don't like the Ti coating except for carbon blades. Don't see the point of it on stainless blades. I prefer a bright blade. I normally emory off most of the Ti coating on my stainless blades.

For a well used EDC these scratch marks look pretty normal. I don't see any indication of corrosion. I wonder what the cost difference is between DLC and TiCN coatings is.

I like the TiCN coating, myself. I don't rate it quite as highly as I do Diamond Like Carbon, but it's way WAY better than some of the black paint I've seen on knives. TiCN is used to coat the business end of production end mills, so I think it's doing great on my Cryos.

I have a couple cheap Gerber Paraframe knives with the TiCN coating, and they look pretty much the same as the Cryo pictured above. One shows considerable frame wear, but it took years of daily carry for it to get that way. Overall I was happy with how well it held up.

To be fair this knife didnt get EDC all that much, but it got the garage assignment and has been covered in grease and metal shavings a few times.

Now that I've been using my Cryo a little bit, I thought I'd give some more feedback. The finish is quickly wearing off the blade as I use it and clean it. The coating is not holding up nearly as well as the coating on my Gerber Paraframe.
