Does anyone have any experience with the Tidioute Cutlery #25, which I understand is actually made by Greater Eastern Cutlery? The site I found it on has it for what I think is a good price, and the pattern looks very appealing, but I'm wondering if any of you could recount your experiences with it, and also possibly post some pictures (which is always greatly appreciated).

I don't happen to own one of that pattern (though I own several other knives made by Great Eastern Cutlery).

You are correct in that it was made by GEC, they make all the "Great Eastern" and "Tidioute" and "Northfield" knives in the same place.

The Jack will have 1095 steel blades (which you probably already knew), the spring will most likley be stout but with the EZopen area you will not have any problem opening it, and the knife should be very high in the fit and finish department.

It looks to be a very pocket friendly pattern. I'm sure someone that owns one will reply with more information.

I have one. The fit and finish is very good, the spring is quite strong but manageable with the EZ open cutout (I could not open it if it were a standard pattern with a nail nick). Mine was not very sharp from the box. The pattern is very appealing (sheepsfoot blade with nice swedging). It's a beefy little knife, vaguely reminiscent of the Case Loom Fixer pattern but much smaller. When closed, it's not the most compact pattern due to the blade and EZ open feature. The etched blade markings are not my cup of tea (especially if it is a 1 of 50), but they can be removed (for the most part) with a little polish. The 1095 should develop a nice patina over time, and can be enhanced with a little vinegar-water mixture. All in all I'd say it's a good value.

In my opinion it is a toss-up between the moose and ez-open as the which is the best Great Eastern knife made to date. Every one I have handled is smooth opening (with the GEC above average tension, of course); and built to last a lifetime. Very pocket friendly and the sheepsfoot is just a little nicer touch for an ez-open than the spear.

I'm quite happy with mine in natural bone and the sheepsfoot blade. It's a nice trim package and a pleasure to use. I like the symmetry of the pattern and pinching the blade to open works fine. Sorry no pics but I guarantee you'll like it.

Hm, not great factory edges, eh? I only have a spyderco sharpmaker as far as sharpening tools go, so that might not work out too well. What is the approximate edge angle from the factory? If it's either 30 or 40 degrees, I should be able to get some coarse diamond stones and affix them to the sharpmaker rods and get a good edge without much trouble.

you should be able to get a razor edge with a sharpmaker at the 40 degree angle, I just got one and I'm amazed at how easy it is to use, and by no means have I ever been good at sharpening.
p.s. I've been meaning to pick up one of those GreatEastern knives myself.

Well, if I get some money for knives any time soon, I'll have to add this to the list. Hopefully it's not too long before that happens...
