So if you use a lanyard what do you tie it to incase it drops, through a belt loop, wrist? Thanks!

Back when I was working construction and actually using lanyards, I usually tied them in one of two places.

When I was working in manholes, and drainage systems I'd often have it tied around my wrist because #1 I did NOT want to stick my hand down in the "goop" that's often in the bottom of those things to retrieve a knife. and #2 I'm a fairly broad fella, and often times would have a hard time bending and moving in such limited areas period.

When crawling around underneath buildings I'd often tie the lanyard around my neck, cause it was much less awkward to reach it that way than if it were in any of my pockets. The two knives I did this with were primarily a Swiss Adventurer and a Tops Scalpel. (learned to leave the Chris Reeves and so forth at home fairly early on)

Oh, and when I worked Security at the Native Hospital I just kept a small pink lanyard on my MT UDT cuz it made it look much friendlier, and gave me very quick access from my shirt pocket.

Just got to thinkin' of something a friend mentioned to me about a month ago when we were talking about knife openings.

He had a guy in his knife shop that carried a Spyderco Harpy with about a foot an' a half long lanyard tied to it. When he drew the knife he would grab the tail of the lanyard and "whip" it around in a circle, causing the knife to open in mid-air, then as it continued it's arc he would let the lanyard wrap around his hand twice.

He professed that it took him quite awhile to learn it (as was evidenced by the plethora of scars all over his hand) and would suggest a steel glove if anyone else wanted to practice this wonderful opening style...
