Tiger Hide Handles - all mags or just some?

I read when the BATAC's were announced that the tiger hide handles on the LE's would be mags even though it wasn't mentioned in the description on the site. It was stated by a forumite that "all tiger hide handles are magnums even if it doesn't state as such". Is this true? I have just recieved a Satin Jack Tac LE, and was assuming from the quote I'd read about "all tiger hides are mags" that this SJ LE would have magnums. It's clearly not. I could be wrong, but they definitely don't resemble the mags on my other blades. I know they are definitely not mags on this SJ LE. I don't like any of the models in standards, so I definitely was confused when I bought this SJ LE. Will the BATAC LE's have the same not-so-mag tiger hide "magnums"?

p.s. this definitely falls under a "no regrets" situation as I'm sure I'll recoupe what I paid, so no regrets here.;)

jerry has said the batacle's will be mags.

the sjtacle's were not, at least not like any others. i have not heard anyone say these tigers were thicker than any other scales. dont know why.

I may be incorrect, but the SJTAC LEs had snakeskin handles, not tiger. I have not seen a snakeskin mag as of yet. All tiger LE handles that I have seen were Mag.

The SJTACLE has tigerhide slabs, not snakeskin. I have a SJTACLE and it has Tigerstripe (tigerhide/tigerstripe interchangable). They are magnums as Jerry has stated himself. The reason there is so much confusion about it is there is almost ZERO difference in the magnum vs standard on the TAC handle design. The magnum slab on the TAC's is about 1mm thicker and is more square in cross section...meaning the handle will have more of a square feel. The standards are more curved top to bottom. There is no palm swell on the TAC magnums.

And to answer the initial question... ALL Tigerhide slabs have been magnums on the TAC, Fusion and SF handle designs.

Thanks Dunner. So the BA Tac LE's will have the same slabs as the SJ Tac LE I have?

I know, I'm a dunce, but can I recap this just for clarity. So the SJ TAC LE's and these new BA Tac LE's will be the same; got it.

So it's safe to assume that all the "magnum" options on the CG's will be sans-palm swells, and be just like the SJ TAC LE's. (i.e. not-so-magnum like the fusions with their palm swells.)

Here's what Jerry said about it.

The LE's are mags. . . All Tiger Hides are mags. . . . Apparently your crystal ball is broken today!!!. . . .We'll need to add that to the site ASAP. . . Thanks for pointing that out! :)

Cheers!

Jerry :D

There is no difference in contour between the standard and the magnums. The difference is in the base thickness. The magnums will add approx. 1/8" - 3/16" to the overall thickness of the handle.

Hope this helps,

Jerry

Rat, good point. Thanks for mentioning that.
Now I remember Garth saying that.
:o

OK fellas lets see if I can clear this up.
The correct term is Tiger hide. However the item in question that is being referred to as Tiger Stripe is in fact the same material as Tiger Hide.

Tiger hide micarta is essentially a layered canvas micarta containing black canvas, a tan colored canvas and resin. Now here's where it gets tricky. The tan canvas, with age, can darken. So we can see a variation of tones in the tan canvas which is what is causing the confusion. All tigerhide micarta starts out the same way.

Also as Progunner pointed out, by oiling the handle you can darken the material, and to throw another loop at you guys, I have found that different oils will also produce different shades.

Tigerhide, like any other multi layered material, can and will have varying shades of color. We have the same thing with our snakeskin micarta. With age, oil and depth of grinding or machining you will get many different variations.

This all adds to the mistique of these materials as every knife truelly has its own special look.

I hope this helps clear a little bit of the confusion. Of course I may have just made it worse.

Anyway to sum up this post, Tiger hide and Tiger stripe, as it has been called elsewhere, are the same material however appearance of said material can vary.

Too much typing I need a drink,
Garth
