I just received my FFBM LE, which is beautiful in every way __ except that it doesn't seem to have the Tiger Hide grips it was advertised as having.

However, I've never seen Tiger Hide in the flesh before so I could be wrong. My grips are blue-green stripes on a beige background, not the orange-black colors of the one on the Busse Company Store website. I append a few pictures:

Can anyone tell me if this is Tiger Hide micarta or not?

Thanks,
Ard Ri

Definitely Tiger Hide!!!!! Slap some mineral oil on the handles and it'll turn into a dark orange and black hide.

The handles will also darken up with use, from the oils on your hand.

:D

I agree, it is certainly Tiger Hide.
Just throw a little water on the Micarta and the color will pop for verification! It will then dry out to look exactly as it currently appears.

BTW, oil is not required as Micarta is not succeptible to shrinkage as natural materials are. With usage, the natural oil, breakfast butter, snot, and sweat on your hand will bring the color out beautifully as well.:D

Scrubbing them with a brush and some dish soap has helped some of mine.

Like there is 'dust' left over from the machining process

Well that's good to hear. I'll try the suggested methods. I really didn't want to send it back__it has quite a lucky serial number, as you may have noticed.

Thanks,
Ard Ri

The fine ends of the canvas thread are still present after the cutting/shaping process. I have no skill or patience for a Dremel but you can 'polish' canvas Micarta with the proper grit paste and a polishing wheel. I'd rather just beat the hell out of it and let it get it's own look.

The water test did indeed start to bring out some orangey and blackish colors. I think I'll forgo the oil and let it take its color from dirt and oily human sweat.

Looks faulty to me -- better sell it to one of us for cheap and try again:D:D

Seriously - that is a beautiful knife you have there!

Now few would confess that luck is merely a matter of superstition and how something looks or feels to you, hence I'll rely on number theory (and pretend that I knew all this beforehand). 937, in number theory, (see links below) is a "natural number in a set which is generated by a "sieve" similar to the Sieve of Eratosthenes that generates the primes."

Who would have thunk superstition was underlain by higher mathematics?

And here I've been thinking this was the lucky #:grumpy:

Yours has a good amount of character in the slabs, and would look really cool when you decide to oil it up! Congrats!!

Hey Jaxx- The last time this issue came up you showed a black/ Tiger hide active duty the you had done some work on. Can you tell me exactly what you did. It looks like you sanded the handle down and maybe polished the spine?

I am thinking I will do something similar to mine, but do not want to screw it up to bad.

Thanks

Yes... I sanded the handle grips down flat (mostly... I need to hit a few areas again to get the rest of the 'dimples' out) and sanded the coating off of the spine/tang all the way around. I did it all by hand, and it was a real PITA trying to achieve the results WITHOUT getting cut by the wicked edge on it, which I somehow managed to avoid :D. I recommend taping the edge with something like packing tape or maybe painter's tape... Heck, even Scotch tape might do. NOT duct tape, it may pull off a piece of the coating. Don't press the tape down hard, so you can easily remove it... But, this way you can concentrate on the modding and not so much on where the edge is in relation to where your fingers are, LOL :D:thumbup: I used course sandpaper at first and worked up to 600grit for a satin-like finish, same for the handle for a smooth finish.
