just saw a post from another forum,
some guy own a Tiger shark, or he claim it looks like one
with blade length of 9", but no coating, no serrated section
some other guy came up and say it might be the Model TS-100
so i did a little research on google.com, and the only place i can
find some info about it is a website in Japan, now Mr. Ron
is this some discontinued model? or is it only sold in Japan?

Hi lohango,

SOG's Tigershark has gone through several stages of evolution over its 14 (or so) years of life. Let me explain.
  • First Model: Introduced as SOG's fifth knife, this Kraton handled, 9" bowie was made with SK-5 carbon steel and had a satin finish. This knife was provided with a leather sheath.
  • Second Model: About four or five years ago, we added our grey powder coating to this knife. Sometime between this model and the third, the steel was converted from SK-5 carbon steel to AUS6 stainless steel.
  • Third Model: About three years ago, 3" of serrations were added and the leather sheath was converted to a tactical Kydex one. This is the model of the knife shown in the linked picture above.
Some minor nuances of these transitions happened subtly, so there is no concrete way to know exactly where in this timeline a knife was manufactured.

There is no SOG model labeled the TS-100. That may be a dealer’s part designation. For SOG, it has always been the S5 Tigershark. No different models are sold exclusively specific regions around the world. The only exception/variation to the name would be that the current model Tigershark has been marketed by US Cavalry as the SEAL Master.

Hope this helps.

thanks Ron, then that knife must be the first model of Tiger Shark, man i wish i can have one of those, but i'm satisfy with the one i have right now, Tiger Shark Rulez!!:p

I have a "third model" Tigershark, and it's an excellent knife! The only thing about it that I'd change is to slightly round the handle so it's not so bulky-feeling in MY hand.:).

Hi Guys, Ron I used to have a very old SOG catolog with the Tigershark on the front splitting a .45 in half. The picture was croped in a square unlike the newer ones with the picture croped like a circle. I swear I remember it saying that the Tigershark was made out of SUP-9 carbon steel. This would make sence because I looked up SUP-9 on a steel web page and it says SUP-9 is Japanese and is close to American 5160. I vividly remember this. I don't have the catlog anymore so I guess I could be wrong but I don't think so. I have never seen or read about SUP-9 sence then and that is why I remember this so clearly! Do some digging and see if you can find a old catalog just for kicks!:D I'm not trying to prouve you wrong but I have to know if I'm remembering right!:)

Hi Chris,

There were four versions of the brochure you are referencing showing the Tigershark on its cover splitting a .45 caliber bullet. The image below is from the oldest of these four.

In reviewing these brochures, no reference is made to SUP-9. in fact, the only reference says the Tigershark is made "from the finest exotic carbon steel." I've ask Spencer in the past the type of carbon steel SOG has used in a variety of its older carbon steel knives (like the Nite Tech, Midnight Tiger, Recon Government, etc.). He said that SK-5 has been the exclusive carbon steel we've used in all of these knives.

A little more triva: The picture below is described in the brochure this way:
This high-speed photograph was frozen at one millionth of a second and captures a jacketed .45 caliber bullet split after being fired from point blank range. The blade shows up white where lead has been deposited after seventeen shots.

Ron,

I have a Tigershark, and I have a .45 pistol (Glock 21), but I'm sure as heck NOT going to take any shots at my Tigershark!.:D..:D.

Ron I remember the reference "from the finest exotic carbon steel". I must be mistaken but now I'm going to loose sleep thinking where I saw that!!  :( My next guess is from an old Cutlery Shoppe catalog, they list the specs and I have seen a few knives listed with the wrong steel! My bad and I apologise(sp?)

Hi There Everyone!

Ron: Could you please ask "The Chief" what ever became of the Tigershark (used for the shoot) in question?
If its still around on display at the SOG-K HQ perhaps?
Surely a true holy grail of sorts if it's ever put up for sale to die-hard SOG collectors.
I've heard of the term "splitting hairs", but this is an awesome picture everytime I look at it - truly remarkable, a warriors knife bulletproof even on its shaving sharp edge!

Krizzard, out.

That picture is truley amazing! It shows just how well tempered the blade is taking that shock and not shattering!

That knife in the picture seems like the
first model i was talking about.
well, the owner of that knife(not the one in the pic)
i've met at another forum wanted to sale his
1st model. i've asked him to reserve it for me,
hopefully i can get it at march or april:D

it is "that" hard to find a 1st model TS
