Here is a gun knife combo I recently finished up. The stripes are Boron Carbide selectively coated on with the help of Bodycote who does the coating on the Kershaw/Ken Onion Chive and many more knives as well. This stuff is hard! I scratched up the blade in the silver colored parts by digging in dirt, then reblasted the scratched part and it looks like new. I am very impressed by this coating and thanks to Darrel lewis and Ann Spuller for helping me do this. More to come! ;)

Rob you guys make me sick. I wish handguns were more carryable in Canada.
Who would I contact to see if that coating can be done on a custom rifle I am having made for the wife.

Rob,

That effect is really wicked! What is the process for the boron carbide application. Is it a costly process? Whatever, it still looks really cool.

Regards,

David

Rob,

Can that be done on Talonite and titanium??? I may just have to send you one of Tom's knives!!:)

Rob, what is this? Do you go out of your way to make me feel envious?
That is a good looking combo! Now I know if I send you a gun you'll have it refinished and supply for knife for the set! Right?

Rob, that is just flat out COOL! THe pattern and color are perfect.

What do the neighbors think when they look over and see you digging in the dirt with a very large knife and high caliber handgun? Is this a normal thing? Is there a row of sweet peas out back winding along a lattice of SKS rifles? Just wondering.

Mr. Simonich, I hope you have a table full o' tiger stripes at the next show I see you in. Sweet stuff

Rob first let me thank you for working with Bodycote Diamond Black on such a Great Project As we were sitting in the bar at the Blade Show I never thought the results would be accomplished this fast.Thank You again for you efforts and look forward to working with you again.
I'm sure many members would like to know a little about Boron Carbide so I'll try to answer a few common questions.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Diamond Black coatings are extremely hard, thin ceramic films with a nano-crystalline structure applied in vacuum chambers via physical vapor deposition. The extreme hardness and excellent adhesion of Diamond Black films provide wear-resistance and lubricity for many different materials.

HARDNESS
Our surface hardness,as measured on the Knoop scale,is 4700Kg/mm2 or equivalent of Rc93-95

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
As a ceramic material,Diamond Blackfilms are inherently inert.Specific formulations can be made to be higly resistant to gases chemicals and salts.

LOW APPLICATION TEMPERATURE
Boron Carbide coating is accomplished at less then 250F. This temperature is so low that drawback of temper or dimensional change does not occur.

UNIFORMITY
Diamond Black films are sputtered in vacuum at thicknesses ranging from .5 to 3.0 microns (20 to 120 millionths of a inch)

I hope this answers a few of your questions.

First, thanks Darrell for the tech info, you covered it very nicely, much more than I knew before now!

Second, the gun still works fine, I won an IDPA match with it this morning! :p

Third, for all you wondering about price and such for the coating, I just dont know but you arent going to see a lot of this stuff as Darrell has explained it ties up their chamber and it really is not cost effective for them to do it. This is more of a "see if it works" trial.

Vel, the neighbors are pretty used to me by now. They just casually gather the childern and hide now, they used to run and leave the kids behind. :D

Terril ,send lots of guns! You might even get one back! ha ha

C4, it can be done on about any metalic.

RDockrell, move to the states man!

Thanks for all the comppliments and replys!

Its bad enough that you have to make your knife ugly like that, but NOT your gun too!!!! I guess you kinda get bored out there in the middle of nowhere!!!!!! :):):)

NICE ROB!!

Now I got the urge to chord wrap the handle on my Combat Commander so it matches my American Ninja ;)

All kidding aside, that is one HOT looking combo!!

Neil
