ok so We were asked to try and "tiger stripe" a knife by a forum member, Never tried it this way before, but I really like it!! I think it would look really cool on a wider knife where you could get some longer more dramatic lines. So here is what worked for me. I hand sanded to 800 grit before a short etch to get the hamon to show first. Then I painted on a resist and she went back in for a longer etch. Neutralized, then removed the resist and buffed. This will definitely not wear off. I would love to get some input on what you guys think...

I think the stripes look pretty awesome, so does the hamon, but not necessarily together.

It seems such a shame to have that hamon even partially covered up.

Sharp looking knife BTW.

And maybe a little black or blue nail polish next time to be a little more manly :)

I like that finish a lot. Would love to see more of it. Stuff like this is why I want to do some work with carbon steels:thumbup:

I really like it, you nailed it. What kind of etchant did you use if you don't mind me asking?

We use sulfamic acid. Its generally a masonry cleaner and you can pick it up at any of the big hardware stores in the tile section. and it works better hot than cold. Be sure to have good ventilation.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

Exceptional work!

I also use the nail polish method. The clerk looked at me kind of weird when I stepped up the the counter with several bottles of nail polish.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone!

I would like to see some other knives with a resist put on before etch. so if any of you have some pics post em up please!

I'm in the process of moving right now, but I'm going to try this out as soon as I get my shop moved and reconfigured.

I'm glad you got some form of inspiration from this. I can't wait to see what you come up with when you get in your new shop. making this one has inspired me to try out some different patterns in the future. I haven't seen anything like it yet, though I haven't looked too hard. I'm sure I'm not the first...

Dan, I don't usually go for striping, I like a nice simple hamon.

But that looks realy good.

Since reading this I've had alot of really crazy ideas come to mind. I'm really looking forward to trying them out.
