With use and taking my Tiger in and out of its sheath a number of times certain parts of the coating are coming off. Anyone know if there is a product either store bought or from SOG to touch it up?

Cheers,

Guard....

From what ive heard their really isnt anyway to replace the powder coating on the knife and i dont think anyone offers this service...If you wanted another coating you could sand off the rest of the powder coating and then get it Gun Blued which in my opinion looks very nice on Knives.

Ahhh... don't worry about the coating.... it's meant to come off.:p:D
No I really don't think there is any way to touch up the coating, doesn't really bother me though, I kinda like it looking used.:D

don't sweat the powder coating coming off, just one of those things..... After a week or so of stropping my SEAL 2000, there wasn't a whole lot of the powdercoat left. Hasn't interfered one little bit.

uh, I don't think Stainless Steel can be gun-blued ?? not certain about that, needs to be checked. Carbon steel can, but not stainless ??

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. Tigershark.... one of my favorite SOG's !!

I'm not sure about gun blueing stainless...I just assumed since i've seen some tigersharks gun blued that you could...maybe im thinking of the older carbon steel tigersharks gun blued???

my metallurgical understanding is that Stainless cannot be gun-blued.

So my guess is that if you've seen a gun-blued Tigershark, it's the old carbon steel variety and version.

Carl

This is why I hate it when the knife companies put this crap on the blades in the first place. It wears, flakes, chips off and you have a shi**y looking piece! At least when it is satin finish you can polish / sand it out or if it is bead blasted you can blast it again and even if it is blued you can re-blue it. These coatings grey, black and whatever suck. Sorry but it is true. They ruined the TigerShark when they did that to it. Luckily I recently picked up a couple of old TS's in Carbon Steel and one Cutlery Shoppe Midnite Tiger. They are the best. Also the leather sheaths that came with them are very nice. Just my opinion but I bet I'm not alone. By the way you can not blue stainless but there are other processes to darken it, PVD for one. But it can't be done to knives easily due to ruining the heat treatment and melting the handles; it is done at about 500 degrees F. As far as steels go Carbon is the best but most are good as long as the proper heat treatment is performed.

Cheers, Vince.

The coating was meant to make the knife non-reflective for the SEALs I think...

I find it surprising that the coating can come off as easily as you guys stated... :foot:

Baton one log and pretty much every part of the blade that touched wood will no longer have coating on it.

Vince,

you got a Midnight Tiger ???? Way Cool !!!!!
and lotsa carbon steel Tigersharks ?? Incredible !!!!!!

Cheers,

Carl

Well I guess since th powder comes of that easily no one would use it for cutting meat for eating during camping trips right??

Eating powdered meat is like a :foot: .

wadly,

"satin finish" .... by that do you mean remove all the powder coating and leave it bare metal ??
That's pretty much the condition of my former SOG SEAL 2000, by the time I had messed around with field use and sharpening and stropping, all the powder coat was gone from the business parts of the blade.
As you say, it works !!!

Cheers,

Carl

Great Picture !!!

I gun-blued mine after I bought it, using a cold-soak method. Did the job, but I know it's nothing as spectacular as a professionally done hot-blue !!

WOW !!!!

and, notice there are no serrations on the blade..... as I understand it, that is how you know it is Carbon Steel, the early versions were carbon steel.

Cheers,

Carl
