I recently retired, and I don't want to spend myself into eating dog food. Would anyone care to comment on which would make a better EDC self defense knife: The Tighe Stick, or The Mamba. I greatly appreciate your input, and your valuable time.

I dont have either of them but from the looks of it. I would think that the Tighe Stick would be better since it has a tanto style edge which would bit in better on a slashing cut. But on the other hand the Mamba would be a better thruster.

But in my honest opinion if your going to be using it for self defense only i would look at a Matriarch 2, Yojimbo 2 Civilian, Ulize, P'Kal . Plus the Matriarch 2 and Yojimbo 2 are cheaper then the models your looking at. If your looking for users to you can't go wrong with the Police, Endura, Paramilitary 2 or Military.

But if your set on getting one of those two it would depend on you and your fighting style slashing or thrusting.

I agree with this completely. The Mamba and Tighe Stick don't strike me as self defense blades. They are collaborations of very impressive custom knives in their own right and are more for the collector than the fighter. I suppose they could be at home equally in any role depending on the individual. I'd say Mamba, I want one anyways. I'm not digging the opening hole on the Tighe Stick, there is something about those models with the opening hole that protrudes well above the blade that are on my no go list. Just personal preference though. For self defense, Yo2 or a Matriatch 2

i own both Tighe stick and Mamba, but in my display cabinet!if i would use a Spyderco for self defense a Starmate or a Ayoob would be my choice.the Starmate cheaper and easier to come by!but again said,i would never considder a knife for self defense, maybe as a last "line of defense".

IMO, if strictly self defense, you would want to go with a fixed blade no? or fixed Karambit (hole for finger, less likely for your assailant to get knife from you and use it on you)? If concealment is a concern, then maybe a smaller fixed blade like an Alan Folts Minimalist or something of that nature. I am not as knowledgeable as the people in here, but actually interesting topic to me, if has to be folder and last ditch knife, then maybe even an auto OTF? because you can conceal till last second? would love to hear input on this from the posters above or more knowledgeable people than me. I am still learning....

Ok... I'm back. I don't like to talk about knives without pics....
I have to say if I absolutely have to use either of the two for self defense, it would be the Mamba...
I like them both, but the contours on the carbon fiber handle of the Mamba are much more forgiving in a clinched hand. The Mamba is a fast flipper with an upswept that keeps the cut out in front of your hand.
The Tighe Stick is no less a formidable defensive weapon, but I don't think I'd want to wrenched down on the titanium edges for any amount of time.
Both knives are up swept, but the Tighe Stick is a tanto up swept blade... however the tanto edge thins out unlike the Mamba
Take a look.

In a self-defense situation... I have whatever I brought... most days that would be a Military S30V and a Ruger SP101 357 - which one I use depends on the situation... if I am assailed by cardboard, the Military would definitely be my choice....

lol..:D

I own the Spyderco Civilian, but being a modest collector, and wanting a very long life out of my knives, I like to add to my collection when I can, and not relinquishing any of the edged instrument's prowess. I'm thinking of selling a few of my guitars to add some nice knives to my arsenal. I had a near death accident, and lost the use of my three left fingers as they are fairly locked with very little range of motion. If I could afford both the Mamba, and the Tighe Stick, I really would. I was also thinking of perhaps carrying a fixed blade 6" Tanto. I own the 12" Tanto Nightfall Series knife. Since I live in the commie state of Noo Yawrk, self defense is a real issue. Even with a perfectly clean record, obtaining concealed weapons permit takes from 6 months to a year. I am required to obtain no less than FOUR character references, and EVERY firearm is to be registered and carried at all times on the permit. Failure to do so can result in prison time. New York stae, NOT the city, is less restrictive with knives. New York City leaves one virtually helpless with such restrictive laws concerning personal protection. Thanks again for your input.

I love this explanation of the Yojimbo 2 with Michael Janich. It changed me from I long time Persian blade fan to a wharnclif fan for defense.
