I have a 3 line, no symbol 119 in a snoopy sheath that appears to be the original sheath. Kind of a bear to get the thing into the sheath because of the tip up blade. The previous owner made a couple slices in the sheath. Any comments?

Unless you want to superglue the sheath back together, time to get another. I got one someone did the same thing to that was also dried out so much it's hard as a rock. I asked Joe H. about finding the correct sheath for a replacement and he found a good used one. Of course by the time I got it from him, I acquired a swivel sheath at flea market. BTW, I don't remember ever seeing a tip up 119. I do still have the one Joe sent me.

I'm curious: what's the meaning of "tip-up"? I need to find a correct sheath for my pre-1986 Buck 119, so I'm wondering if there is some detail I need to know.

He probably means you read the Buck stamp with the tip of the knife pointing up.

No, that's too easy......he must just be referring to the clip-point of the blade having a lot of up-sweep.

BG42 is right. I probably used the wrong identifier when I said tip up. What I was referring to was the huge sweep on my 119. I'd post a pic if someone could tell me how to do that. It would be interesting for some of the collectors to show the various styles of the 119.

I'd like to know what your meaning by 'tip up' as well? I've not seen one that tight. They're usually loose. DM

Greetings David. I'm new to the forum and have enjoyed reading your posts. As I said above I probably called it the wrong thing. I have an older 119 with a huge upsweep on the blade which makes it very hard to get it into the sheath. I'd post a picture if someone could tell me how to do that. Thanks.

Well, I just go to Photobucket and copy the info and paste it right in here.

If you go to the advanced thread reply instead of the one that automatically shows up for a response, I think you can click on image up at the top and load a pic from your computer.

I haven't used it, so I'm not really up on that.

That is some up sweep. The tip of the blade is higher than the back bone. I cant tell for sure but it appears to be '83-'85.

Really a bear to get into the sheath. Think its unique? Factory flaw? I thought maybe this sheath wasn't made for this knife but the period looks right.

Its a Group 3, 1981 (1 and 2). I have the same model w/ the same type sheath only not a fold over but sewn on both sides. Your belt loop is a little longer than mine. My knife has the same curve which I prefer for skinning. Not so often found on 119's, about half is the norm which is why I kept mine. It looks normal to me for this year model. Joe even commented about this blade shape on a 119 some time back. Thanks Utah, DM

Great info David. Thanks much. I'm not a hunter but I am an avid backpacker and fisherman. If it bothers me too much I'll let you guys know if I sell it. The knife itself is in perfect condition.

Utah_fish,

There are several custom sheaths out there that will fit a 119. The knife if great and not often found. Keep the knife and find a sheath that it will fit.

There are a bunch of leather guys on bladeforums, or you could scan "the big auction site" of something like custom sheath for Buck 119 and you'll surely find at least a couple.

That sheath is the same one I found at a flea market and it's tight on a regular 119. I have a regular snoopy sheath without the swivel that I'll make available if you want it. My 1967 inverted 2 liner has the same sweep on the blade. here is a picture of the 2 types side by side. Notice the swivel is narrower than the non-swivel.
