Just a personal experience for all you Buck knife folks to "refresh" your thoughts on your personal knife security.
Yesterday, was sitting watching Clint, do Dirty Harry for the upteenth time, when a big 4X4 pickup turns around in my driveway. I was looking directly at it at 25 yards. It then speeds off. Wife had just answered phone which gave us a precise time. Twenty minutes later neighbors come from across street, cross corner which I could not see from TV, and say they had been broken into and robbed. Small town cop comes, I give description of guy in truck and truck. A quick as a flash theres a chase in the next little town 10 miles east. Where a guy had tried to break into a house. The neighbors stuff gets tossed out the window during chase. Cops catch guy, neighbors stuff recovered.
The guy picked a well kept lawn type house, with a carport and no cars home.
He was suspected of a multitude of other similar breakins. He kicked in the front door which did NOT have a deadbolt lock. Carport door did. He grabbed small things, cameras, jewerly, dvds, etc. Went through all the underwear drawers looking for hidden stuff. Was thirsty and took a gallon of milk..... Long story to shorter, tuff times everybody perk up and rethink their Buck knife secruity. I have a hard time, I like a FEW knives out but not where they can be seen from open window or any in the "visitor"area. Try to think like a crook and are you a ripe target. This has invigorated our half block long neighborhood watch. But in the end take care of your own business.......anybody got any great Buck knife security ideas.....300Bucks

I have outdoor surveillance cameras. In the past year, I have nabbed 3 thieves. Two of them got into cars and a couple of unlocked homes (while the homeowners were asleep!). One guy was just stealing from cars. My videos were the ONLY reason they got caught.

I keep a Springfield XD .40 handy but that only works if you're home at the time of a break-in.

My knives are scattered around the house in drawers, various boxes, etc so it would be difficult for a thief to walk off with all of them.

300: Thanks for the reminder to stay vigilant

Good Post!!!!

Even with the security alarm here, all of these toys laying around here do need to migrate back down to the big toy box.

This is when house dogs are good. My too vicious dogs will lick to death any buglars.

...Being that I'm down here in the retirement mecca for a lot of seniors, the chances of actual "home invasions" are probably higher than in other areas of the country. Knives don't have to be out in the open as they take their time and ransack entire homes looking for goodies. Not a week goes by that I don't hear of such an event in areas relatively close to mine. A 9mm +P 124gr Double-Tap helps afford some feeling of security. Unfortunately most of the "Geritol" group sees firearms as something to roll their eyes at and go EWWWW...

yes crooks are one reason many dont show off the herd ..
i want to have mine out to see and show off.. and did...
tell i was asked by the boy friend of wifes coworker that stoped by..
wow... nice now jest which is the most expensive one in there?,,
then.. gee what would every thing in there cost?

down come that one display .. i can jest see him saying to a bud...
"" wow man, you should see all the gold knives this dude has!""

now all 4 are put away..
if the person is not worth the
10 min it takes to get them out
well they jest don't see 'em...
working on a display that is bult in with lexan front
that and have 2 video cameras in the house ..
guess one out side would not hurt either..

damm crooks ...
glad we got a nozy neabor keeps an eye on every one!

Damn all crooks sucks... :thumbdn: ... My brother had to take out a guy that came in his home last year... He put a Big hole all the way through him... The guy was beating the s**t out of him at first, but my Brother managed to get away from him some how and made his way up the stairs to his room and grabbed his 12 gage shotgun and put a big hole through that guy and his sliding glass door... That guy will never do that again, for sure... My brother got about 80+ staples in his head and lots of bruises and indents all over his body... There was more blood from my brother, than the other guy.... That guy beat the sh*% out of my brother with a steel rod like the ones that the cops use... So you never know what could happen to you or a love one... Keep safe and keep an eye out for crooks and thieves..... ...

ITE

When he recover from the beating the town that he lives in, gave him a Big Party... :D ... ... :D

ITE,
Thats horrible what happened to your brother! I'm glad he has recovered from that. Its a good thing he had some protection handy.
That story puts the whole knife security issue in perspective.
I keep my knives either locked up in a safe or in a non descript carboard box. From where I sit at Buck , I have heard too many stories of break ins. Folks call up looking for knife values for insurance purposes. On the one hand they might get some $$ for the stolen knives but often times the knives they lost...they will never find another like it even if they did have the money to buy it.

This is when house dogs are good.

See that picture of my girlfriend in my avatar. She throws up her hackles and lets out one heck of a fierce bark at anyone she doesn't know. I've not dissuaded her.

Also, I do carry insurance on all the wife's sparklers and my guns. The knife & coin collections I keep hid away in a locked file cabinet and only show certain people. Not as much fun but.... I guess I should get all that to the insurance too. My growing Buck infatuation has moved the value up a bit. [ Don't tell the wife.]

Fortunately Maine is one of the more safe/low crime areas to live (makes for boring nightly news compared to Jackson MS which I listen to when home ;););) ) But just in case, I do keep an S&W Mod 66-3 .357 next to the bed and a Beretta Cougar 45acp in the end table next to my chair in the Den.

if the person is not worth the
10 min it takes to get them out
well they jest don't see 'em...
EXACTLY!!!!

Keep safe and keep an eye out for crooks and thieves..... ...
Well put and thanks for an eye opening reminder what it can be like if you're unlucky to have a dirtbag target your home while your there.

+1 on your brother's C.I.K.

A mossberg 500 12 gauge with 3" #1 shot and a safe. Glad I have never had to test its intruder stopping power but bets are it will immediately arrest any forward momentum...

I can not understand why anyone would not want to have some kind of fail safe option for personal protection to fall back on in an emergency. If you can not tolerate firearms at least have some kind of safe room installed...

Living in a rural area does give criminals pause because most of the folks out here are well armed.

Thanks for the kind words... My Brother is doing great... All is good with him... He lives in Veneta, Oregon about 20 miles west of Eugene, Oregon in a rural area, well a small town... The Guy was about 6' 5" and about 300 pounds... ... The cops in Eugene, Oregon new him really good... Stay safe...

I have a gun safe in the garage bolted to the floor. Apart from guns, these things are good for keeping small valuable things you'd rather not lose. It's not going to keep the really determined scumbag from getting your stuff if they have the time and ability to get into it but it will certainly stop the snatch and grab scumbag who is just looking for things he can grab quickly.

I already lost my bucks, friggin' crackheads got them ,all except the ones i had sent in to Joe for some refurbishing.Money can't replace one of a kind works of art like my first custom shop 110"s.I have rebuilt the collection somewhat, but nowhere near what i had.

I have a Winchester defender all ready to protect my family in the event someone breaks in while we are home,I would say getting in was the easy part, getting out will be the test.theives suck!!!!

Here is my home protection policy. My Ruger sp101 .357. My wifes taruas ? .357 and my 2 mutts.

Guys, Having been on the firearms instructor side of lawman gun training. Your gun is only good if you have it in your hand. If you have one at home and come in on someone no matter what you feel like doing or where you hid it, act like they already have your gun and will use it on you. Get everyone back OUT fast...and a safe distance away. Carry a cell phone, call for help. Also never shoot someone outside the door threshold. Sorry, but your yard is public access area, and someone even with a gun in their belt and your lawn furniture in there hands, that is not shooting or pointing a gun at you is making you risk your personal freedom and your income forever if you kill or cripple them in the yard or even on the porch. If you don't agree with that then put a locked fence on your property line. Firepower makes me feel good too. But try not to violate any gun laws, such as sawed-off shotguns, that just adds later law misery to the situation if you are forced to defend your home and family during a break-in.

I started the thread as I was hoping to stimulate everyone to look at their own house, their neighborhood, their lifestyle, (but not live a paranoid life), and tweak little things in appearance and security abilities that make the crooks go to another house. Or better yet you and all your neighbors work together......and let'em leave town.
I am a big fan of motion detector lighting and timed inside lights.....also talk about security to your kids, make them understand how they can help......Above all make the situation safe enough in your mind to where you can enjoy owning, handling and sharing with deserving others your Buck knives all while living a lifestyle of freedom.... 300bucks

Exactly, well put.I installed deadbolts (good added strength to doors)and I have a old maverick 12 in a locked box in my truck, winchester defender inside the house in a accessible area, but not where kids can find it or use it for that matter.I carry a buck strider 880 as a last resort,I do not reccommend using a knife unless you are trained ,you will probably not like it when the criminal takes it from you.

I miss my damascus /stag 110's a lot.but hey we are still alive..god bless

My gun safes are bolted to the floor and the wall. I agree with Dave, the only people who see my toys are those I choose to. And as gajinoz pointed out they are also great for other valuables. Fortunately I live in a state where the laws protect me from prosecution should deadly force be required to protect family, friends or neighbors in any place I have the right to be. It's good to be in the Redneck Riveria sometimes.:D

I have spent many an hour wondering why we, as a society, spend so much time and money fidley-foolin around with criminals. We know who they are and the trouble they cause, but we don't do anything about it. All that money spent proving the obvious with the courts and lawyers, then, more money for corrections that don't correct. The end result; they're back on the street doing the same old same old. And the elected representives just keep making more laws covering the same actions that were already illegal. Child molesters, rapist, murderers. Why should anyone ever have the oportunity to commit these crimes more than once. Theft of any kind, why should anyone be able to do it more than twice? Don't get me started on the stupid gun and knife laws. I'll bet there are 50 thousand of them across the nation, and not one of them ever prevented a crime. Here I am, preaching to the choir again. Sorry.

SW, but your right... ... Why do they let them out, just to do it again...
