Looks like one of my Tillandsias (airplant) is about to bloom. First time I have had one do that. Can't wait to see what it looks like. I'm all atwitter (in a macho way) :D

Congratulations "Dad". :D

I used to have several bromeliads including a couple of Tillandsias when I lived on the left coast. They don't do very well in AZ.

Rob,

I am a life time plant nerd and had to click on this thread. CA is so arid, I would only be able to do those in a frequently used bathroom near the shower. This is a huge deal, and I am all atwitter by proxy.

I have to get my act together, go back to the homestead and gather all of my mom's bromeliads, epiphyllum cactus and other items and repot them for heirlooms for my brother, sister, and cousins. My dad is not in the mood to take care of all the back yard duties like mom did. I do not want them to die.

Thanks for the inspiration,

Note: I did not mention bacon in this thread.

Darn! I did it anyways.

pics, or they did not bloom!

The most colorful part of Tillandsias is the bract (which is what that purple thing will turn into). The actual flowers will be pretty small, nondescript things (I'll guess pink) that will open one or two at a time over a long period of time.

Spoken like a true plant nerd.

I used to breed orchids back in my younger days when I had unlimited energy. You ain't seen nothin' yet.:D

When I was in College at Cal Poly Pomona, I had to fulfill some units, within the curriculum that forced me to work inside the Horticulture Unit. I was a little miffed since I worked at a nursery already, supporting my college tuition. I found myself in the Raymond Burr Orchid collection, (it was in a state of disrepair), so I divided some of the cattleya orchids. There were alot that were un named, so I named them. Unknown Soldier and John Doe were some of my favorites. Jimmy Hoffa was in there too!

That truly is a state of disrepair. An unnamed orchid is effectively worthless. It's all about the geneaology.

I also have a few of these.

That's Phalaenopsis Liz Saunders, named after a 21-year-old waitress at an old watering hole of mine who fell down a flight of stairs drunk and killed herself. Her parents were mad I called it "Liz," but that's what she would have wanted.

I have a pet rock. It's name is......Rocky. No it's not. It's Sondrestromfjord. It's not as pretty as a Phalaenopsis, but it's more durable.
