Tilley hat question for punkin heads

I have a question for all of you Tilley hat owners. I would really like one, but I've never seen one in person. The website says to order a size larger than you normally wear. Well I have a big punkin head and wear a 7 7/8 or 8 in a fitted hat. The Tilleys are fitted up to 8 and for anything over that they have an adjustable hat. Does anyone here have one of the 8+ hats and what method do they use for adjustment? I can't find the information anywhere on their site.

Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

Paul,

I'm looking at the print version of the Tilley catalog, and I can't find the information you seek. Maybe you should call them. 1-800-endures.

The catalog says, "We pride ourselves on being able to fit virtually any head in the world. . . ."

And, "Come in every human head size."

That's reassuring, don't you think? (You ARE human, arent you?)

Paul, the ad on their site says that they will not shrink. Here is the actual text:

Won't shrink - Made with pre-shrunk 10 oz. cotton duck

So I am a bit confused as I´m also interested in purchasing one of those. How come that one has to buy a bigger size?

Hi dePaul
Have owned a brown wide brimmed Tilley for almost a decade now, and it is still going strong.. my father has its twin, and if anyone could destroy one...
If I remember correctly in the sizing info when I bought it they mentioned that the hat is oversized to sit more on the crown of the head, rather than using a band around forehead to keep hat in place, so more comfortable in hot weather, no constriction at temples. They have a great two string tiedown system for windy days. Good kit. cheers cm

Try OutDoor Ventures ( I think they still go by that name) on Vine st ( short Vine, over by U.C), or The Benchmark on Kenwood Rd in Blueash. They both used to carry the Tilly , or one similar.

Here's where I got the info about ordering one size larger.

Look about halfway down the page to the section called "Hat Sizing". My concern is that if I have to buy the 8+ adjustable one, that it will have some sort of weird system for adjusting the size. They claim that the 8+ will fit anyone that over a size eight. I can remember going to the PX with my Dad as a kid and they stocked caps up to a 8 3/4! If the 8+ will fit anyone over an 8 I just wonder if it might be too big for me if I'm on the border. The regular size 8 will do me probably (most of my other fitted hats are 7 7/8 but I've had to buy 8's a couple of times).

I will take Ravenn's advice and try to find them locally. I hate buying things like hats and shoes through catalogs or online, because of the whole fit issue.

David,
I generally feel pretty human! My fiancee occasionally uses words like animal in reference to me, but I think it's a compliment.

Ravenn,
Thanks for the info on local sources. I've been to The Benchmark several times but not since Tilley fever. I've never been to OutDoor Ventures, I'll have to look them up. I usually go to Nature Outfitters in Milford because they are reasonably priced (for an outfitter) and extremely nice/helpful.

Thanks for all the info you all,

I too am a pumpkin head. My T3 is a size 8 1/8 that I purchased in Epcot 4 years back. (If my memory serves me, I saw some up to size 8 5/8). Perhaps your best bet is to check hat stores or other retailers and see if they still have inventory of the "old" style, non-adjustable hat. I was told that you should be able to slip 2 fingers between your forehead and the band. I have found that on hot sunny days, the hat breathes well, and when wet the fit becomes "snugger" from the cotton absorbing the moisture. The extra size allows for the expansion of the fibers without the hat becoming uncomfortable. Prior to my T3 I wore a G.I. boony hat but after 2 years it shrunk. I may look silly, (big guy, big head, big hat),but I am comfortable in my Tilley.

Give Tilly a call at their toll free number. They are very nice people to talk to and should be able to tell you anything you need to know. I just got a LT5 and it is sooo comfortable that I have to force myself to take it off in the house.

The number I called is:
1-800-363-8737

Well, I took Ravenn's advice and went to the Benchmark store today. They had several Tilley T3's but none to fit my head. They are every bit as nice as people here have written. They do seem to run big, since a 7 3/4 almost fit. I'm going to order a T3 from them when it comes close to my Bday. That way if it doesn't fit I won't have to pay return shipping. I will also have something for my girl or my family to give me. They never seem to be able to find the things that I would really like (and emails with the appropriate website addresses never seem to work

).

Thanks for everyone's help in this. Thank you to Ravenn again, for pointing out the obvious for me.
