I am in the market for a new hat. I have heard many good things about Tilley and I have decided to get one but want some opinions on the TH3 vs. the TH4. I'm going for the hemp models. I plan to use it mostly for my hikes.

I have two. One is the the T3 and one is a LTM3 Airflo. I suppose that the T3 is a lot like the TH3 only made from different materials.

I haven't had any problems with either hat. I got the Airflo because I live in AZ and thought it would be cooler than my canvas T3. It is actually hotter because it doesn't breath like the canvas one.

I would recommend that you get one.

Great hats. I have the T3 and have worn it over the Chilkoot Pass on two hikes and elsewhere all over the southwest. It has holes in the sides so your head won't overheat. You can also fill it with water and slap it back on to keep your dome cool.

Are they washable for those that are large Scandanavian types that sweat profusely? (not that I know any...);)

ken, I have the TH4. I wanted the bigger brim on account of my huge noggin and I think it looks a little nicer. the hemp is great, plenty cool and feels better than cotton (at least it does to me).
since you've already decided on hemp, it's just a matter of personal preference in brim size. I'd say get the 4, it has more of a classic look IMHO.

p.s. to mongo: yeah, they're all washable. just follow the directions in the owner's manual.

I have a T3 and a LTM5. I really like the snap-up brim on the T3 - I use it constantly in windy conditions.

I had a T4 in hemp and I loved it, but alas the wife stole it.

To wash mine I stick it in the sink with oxyclean and let it sit a couple of hours, rinse well, hang to dry. It will tighten up a bit but relax once it's worn.

I have a T4 Airflow, but now wish I had gotten a TM10 with the mesh sides (I produce a lot of heat off of my head). Quality is first rate, but I owe mine a cleaning.

I got the T6 Airflow. Olive. I loved it so much, I orderd the TM10. The difference is that the T6 has only a mesh strip around the top while the TM10 has the whole ceown in mesh.

They are really amazing hats. If heat is an issue, Go for the TM10 :)

wait, you and your wife have the same head size? I just realized that I'm not sure how I feel about that. :D

We don't, but the Tilley hat sizing system doesn't work, I've purchased and returned 3 Tilley Hats, every time I go 1/8 bigger. The person on the phone says "You can't possibly need that size!". Maybe Canadiens are just pinheads?

In my experience wives & girlfriends will steal your hat (& all your clothes) whether it fits or not -- in fact they seem to feel the bigger it is the better. I think it's a status thing; they want to show all the other girls what a big husband/boyfriend they have.

Mindyou with tilley hats you wear them a bit different than other hats. They are supposed to fall down your head almost to the ears so that gravity holds them and not a band around your head that becomes uncomfortable.

yup, and their sizing scheme doesn't work. Order you normal hat size plus a couple of 1/8ths at least.

As was jokingly pointed in the wilderness sub-forum, I think my Becker looks great in his new LT5 :) :

Time and again I've considered getting a Tilley; I like the T4 the best. A wide brimmed hat is such an essential thing to have for anyone spending any significant time in the sun that it is money well spent, IMO.

I've got four Tilley hats and they great! I just got their new catalog and looks like I'll be getting another one. The one I am interested in is the new model that is waterproof for the rainy season.
