As I am now in the finishing stages of Tim Hancock's book, I feel
a need to share with you some of the illustrations of his knives that
will be displayed in it.

Here is the first amazing one:

"The Original Cowboy Bowie", 1995
This is the largest Bowie Tim has made to date and it is the 140th knife he made.
The fittings are mild steel, inlaid with Sterling silver strips and twisted wire,
and it has a hand-tooled concho adorning the pommel.
The steel is blued with a heat patina. The sheath was Tim's first tip-and-
throat on a leather body. Tim also designed the accent on the throat and
then tooled, cut out and soldered it on.
This is what Tim says about his large Bowie: "I still remember forging this
blade, and how the knife balanced, as if poised ready for action in my
hand. This one just beckons you to take a swing at something. It is the
first one of only six knives where I incorporated both my bit and spur
motifs and my inlay styles. Three of these six knives are displayed here
in the book". Overall length 17 1/2" (444 mm), blade length 12" (305 mm).

All the best,

David,

That's a great looking knife. I love looking at Hancock knives, they are so clean.

Tim's knives always have "that look".
You know the same one that Ferrari, Aston Martin and Holland & Holland have.

love the shield shaped guard, and the stripe treatment on it. What a knife!
Great photo, too! Only wish I could see it all at once, but my computer screen is just not big enough.:)

Darn fine knife.

Are you sure about those specs? 3 1/2" doesn't seem right for the length of the handle.

Thanks, Keith, you are sharp!
The collector must have probably mis-written the length, and I
used his information for the basic re-writing of the caption.
This will be seen to soon, just so that I don't miss it at the later
careful proofreading stage.......

Thanks again,
David Darom (ddd)

For those of you who found the picture that I posted too large for
your screens, here is a smaller version........:)

While at it, here is an interesting close-up detail of the knife that may
have been missed while viewing the larger picture...... :)

Thanks for sharing those with us David. This is not my fav' of his work, but it's always great fun to see his work.

People - take note of the very slight, but critically important, radiused step between the ferrule and the handle material. This is an important visual and tactil detail on fine pieces.

This radius will reduce the visual/tactile impact of slight shrinkage of the handle material that may occur.

It's no accident that some makers seem to have less problem with shrinkage/cracking of natural handle materials than others as there's processes they have developed over the years to reduce these problem and to lesson the impact where it does occur.

that's better, thanks David!

I have corrected the specs for Tim's Bowie posted above.......
The overall length is 17 1/2" (444 mm).
